help, need to get to work in the morning

Hey,

Went to start the vectra (1.8 ecotec) and it started and ran for about 1 second. Now it won't start. It sounds like it wants to. It has a nice smell of fuel so I know that isn't the problem. When it died, it made different sound, but not a noticable or decernable one.

I haven't had a chance to see if there is spark yet, no one to help. I did notice that the timing marks on the cams are about 90 degrees out, the exhaust ahead of the intake -- is this right?

I am going to see if there are any engine codes.

have you just changed the Cambelt? If you have then it could be because the timin is out, but I doubt you have just changed the cambelt, have you?!?!

If it has fuel (by the smell) then it might not have a spark, If it has both a spark and fuel then it could have no compression.

If it hasn't a spark then it could be any number of things, such as the spark module (ie where all the plug leads go on to). It could be broken down plug leads, it could be any number of things.

Nope, haven't touched the cam belt. Pulling the cam belt cover back, I can see that the marks on the cam gears don't point in the same direction. When it is cranking over, it sounds different, like it is spinning just a touch easier than normal.

I haven't done any more checking on it. My wife canceled her dental so I can borrow her car. I'm going to get a compression gauge (need one anyway)

If it sounds like it is spinning easier, then the cambelt could be broken, or it has no compression.

The marks will move so dont worry, you line them up to a fixed mark on the back of the cam cover.
