Fate of the Firenza??

Ok. Today was supposed to be a good day.

Gaz was going to help me weld up the Firenza and hopefully have a 90% solid shell bar a few bits on the front inner wings.

Then I could merrily carry on doing superficial crap like seats and door cards to keep me happy (and pretend I can work on cars lol)

However. We have discovered rust. Lots of rust. So much rust if you dont look away you are blinded in 3 seconds. Gaz is still recovering. Finding a solid bit of metal is like finding the Holy Grail.

Ok maybe its not THAT bad, and it IS fixable (with lots of work/money) but should I just cut my losses, send the buggar to the scrappy and start a different project???? Theres a few Ive had in mind recently which would be much easier as they wouldnt involve any restoration, just modification.

Im at a loss of what to do. This is my first major project, the idea was for me to learn. But theres learning, and then theres taking the p155.

hmmmm. pics to follow

Same here, but don't scrap it if you have the room to store it a little longer. Advertise it in classic magazines and see if you can get someone to take it off your hands for the cost of the ad! You've done your bit by giving it to an enthusiast and then it won't end up on the scrap heap. Its a lot of work for you to do, I personally wouldn't

When doing things like that its far better to work on a certain area than try and do the whole lot, if you keep doing little bits of welding and sealing you will be supprised what you get done:) .

Your in no rush to get it done so keep it and work at it:cool:

That is very true, it can take years to restore a car, just keep doing bits as and when you can, think long term project;)

Ok ok - it's rusty. Very rusty. But it's redeemable. Don't think of it as a rotten out old scrapper. Just fix each bit seperately. By the time it's solid, you will be a superb welder and will be so chuffed with your achievements.

Also, it's a Firenza. You just don't see them any more. Yes, it's a project - and I know it's easy for the rest of us to say but........

KEEP ON WITH IT!!!!!!!!

stop being such a girl :p

Like mart says, pick one section (start with the easiest), chop all the rust out, make a plate to fit, tack it on, make sure it's right, seam it, and then prime it. Move on to the next bit etc. It doesn't take long to get it done. There's a few days welding needed on the shell once you get going on it. Rome wasn't built in a day etc.

The best way to approach it motorvationally is to give yourself a nice job to do, then do an annoying one, then a nice one, then an annoying one etc. I fins seam welding is an annoying job, so I cut out the rust, make a plate and tack it on, and I'm happy because I've nearly sorted it. The seaming comes later.

Pace yourself with it, other wise you'll just go mad and give up

Scrap AdamSRi because Astra's are ****e. :)

Just weld all the bits up, and decide after that Mr. Colonel There's no money involved in welding up loads of holes really. Although it's a pain in the arse, it's not difficult, and it'll be great practive for Gaz and you welding it ;)

well I think I'm gonna go with it. I was really demotivated earlier. Just well tired after having no sleep and seeing lots of big holes made me really really down.

I havent given up on the puppy yet. Bring it mr Firenza.

Sweet, the plan continues, Gaz is welding holes as we speak, the fuel tanks been removed, the engines fluids have been drained ready for engine removal. Bring it on. :D

Thanks for all the encouraging words peeps. I need it. It was just the last straw at the point earlier. Really ****ed me off. Seemed like the project would go on forever. I cant promise good workmanship, but it'll get finished. Ooooh yes.

Theres an XE sat in the garage, being kept warm by a Manta gearbox and Twin 45 Carbs. ;)

lmao, I've managed to get on main area plated and i'm on a rest period at the moment from carrying on with it until whenever i get sick of it tonight! I've been doing all the welding so far - which basically means the bodgetastic level is at maximum lmao

It'll be class when its finished, just needs a few welding sessions and the shell will be sorted, at the end of the day its all plateable, even though it was kind of my fault for battering his car about with the variable pressure regulator finding all these holes! It'll get done, once i've done the boring bits we can start messing with engines and running gear muhahahahahaha ;)
