I can't believe you changed a Cambelt without first timing up the engine lol, sounds like it could be a tooth out

 

My first post maybe isn't clear. I didn't check the position that the original belt was at. I read somewhere that X20XEV engines the marks can be out.

I set the new belt up as per instructions on Haynes manual.

 

But the reason I ask for advice is because I need help. If I knew everything I would not be on here. I'm a home DIY car enthusiast who like to learn how to do things himself.

I'm aware it must be a tooth or two out, but as it looks like the photos in the manual and it doesn't run right i was hoping someone could help.

I've found my old XEV would allow the pulleys to move slightly if a locking tool wasn't used. (I wasn't using one).
It meant as well as routing the belt around, I'd have to move the pulleys to get them lined up and then put belt on.

I've no locking tool either but I had help from someone whilst fitting it initially. Frustrating after spending a few weeks evenings sticking the engine into the corsa and then it not running right :/

 

Sorry I wasn't having a go I was just saying, as allready said it sounds like the cam pulleys have sprung round when you've taken the belt off , how far out are the timing marks on the cam pulleys when the cranks timed up with its mark?

It's no problem, just me overreacting.

I had a real good look last night and its out a tooth on the inlet cam as fat as I can see.

 

 

Easily fixed mate lucky escape I'd say any more and you could of had bent valves, if you time the crank up again so the cam pulleys are back to how they are in the picture carefully and take the tension off the belt get a torque socket to fit the bolt on the center of the inlet pulley and use a ratchet to just lever it round so the marks line up 2 pairs of hands will be handy one will need to hold the pulley marks with the ratchet while the other puts the belt on as the valve springs will be trying to flick the pulley back round,

 

Thanks Tom. I'm going to order a wee locking tool off eBay for a fiver to help as it was hard the last time keeping them in place.

It'll be here on Wednesday so I'll pop back on the forum then and update.

If you cant wait until then some vice grips between both of the pullys will hold them.

Looks like you have all the help you need here but i must mention this. The same thing was happening to me on my x16xe. I orderd a locking tool and i found it was still going out by one tooth. After a lot of times trying and wearing that stupid belt tensioner bolt to a hole lol i simply left the inlet cam where it sits nicely and then moved the exhaust cam and crank slightly to match. It worked and ligned up first time. Thats how i always do it now. Hope that helps if all else fails
