Aye, health and safety killed off the traditional scrappys where there were cars stacked five high and you walked about in 3ft of mud whilst fighting off four enthusiastic Alsations. Plus, cars like Cavaliers, Corsa B's and so on are getting old and rusty and the demand is falling so a lot of stuff like this is just crushed straight away. Other issue is the sheer number of end of life cars in the system is mental - cars have become white goods so not only has demand for older parts fallen, but cars are getting scrapped after a relatively short life and thus the system is flooded. You're not going to keep £70 worth of Corsa B in a yard that may return you £20 in parts and minimal recycle value when you could have something newer and higher value in its place.

Allparts in Bonnybridge used to be brilliant as did Sports Car Breakers at Newbridge but again both have now moved on with the times and are more interested in newer, higher value cars and also breaking cars on site for export and so on.

These days, forums are the best bet for obscure bits.

You can buy a whole running car these days for scrap value, mot failures etc ... if you have the space then your lucks in. Buy it, take parts off it as and when and eventually scrap it and get most of your money back.

If you have no room then it's getting difficult as most scrap dealers are just that, most are simply not interested in selling parts any more. Quick in and out for most cars.

One by one the smaller guys have shut down, mostly due to new regs and not being large enough to warrant the expense to comply. Oil disposal mainly along with no leaks into the ground allowed.

I spent about a year trying to find the original air box and pipe for my 1.8 mk4 astra, couldn't seem to find it anywhere but luckily found a place in lochgelly that had one. The problem was that the 1.6 had a different airbox housing and pipe :(

There were a few decent spec Astra's there actually.

You cant beat a rummage round the scrappys! I love it! Shame the nearest one for me is probably paisley. I agree with the opinion there not as good as they used to be with the health and safety, and there all tight as hell now, so bargains are few and far between.

The lack of corsa b's just shows how rare there becoming, another 2 or 3 years and they will be gold dust in the scrappys (similar to novas now)

Is the one in Alloa still there? Next to Morrisons? Went there years ago, good selection and the guy was actually pleasant - which made a welcome change!

Any of the westcoasters on here know the name & location of the big scrappy in Paisley? Sick of going to Abbeys.

Have you lads tried Mossbank Breakers? Between Aberdeen and Dundee, They are mechanics too so know what they are talking about and understand when trying to describe something. Most breakers / scrappys are just lads that don't really have any mechanical knowledge and are just pulling in motors to crush and / or export.
