also, can I remove it without getting an error message to the ecu?

I'm not sure if blanking the EGR does increase engine performance or not but if it does the gains would hardly even be noticeable mate and probably not worth the overall effort involved unless you are fitting an after-market inlet manifold too.

.....and yes you can blank the EGR off and leave it connected to avoid getting re-occuring EGR error codes.
