Bit of a story but here we go, I changed my engine to a XE and got the dredded leaking sump gasket so the car went in to the garage to get a new one as I knew it is a **** to seal!

So it went in the did it and cracked the sump in the process so had to wait on the sump getting repaired by a specialist alloy welder! all done wallet lighter

Until i started noticing nice rainbow parterns on the road so the car went back in the garage again to get the gasket sorted. So picked car up assured that it was sealed and no leaks "he's took it a run blah blah blah" so thought to my self we'll see!

Again the sump started leaking so i left a little while as i needed the car as it was new year and christmas! during this time i got myself a oil pressure guage so fitted the kit all was working lovely apart from oil leak.

when the guage was fitted i was getting the following:

4 bar at idle cold and 4 when driving cold
then 2 1/2 at idle warm and 4 driving warm

so the car goes in again to get sump sorted and i'am promised it is sorted this time so go to pick the car up at closing time start her up alas no oil pressure so go back in and they say they'll need to wait till tomorrow to get the sump back off. so phone up next day and a bit of old gasket had fell in and blocked the pick up pipe hence no oil pressure so all sorted now except this!

4 bar at idle cold eventully not to quick going to this pressure as before it would climb to this! and 4 bar driving cold

2 bar at idle warm 2 1/2 to 3 bar warm bit concered is this a tat dodgy am i causing damage? what could cause this?

waiting on 0ddball on this probably lmao

oil pump tired? pressure relief valve sicking if so can this be cleaned ?

put a couple of suitable washers behind the relief valve to beef up the spring and hence pressure
and use thicker oil? i run 10w60 and its much better at not leaking as much.

Any reason though why it would suddenly lose pressure after sump gasket and oil change though?

mine did the same. not a flamin clue boss. could take some guesses, but theres not much point, just try the washers, see if it helps.

yeah think i flushed all the crud out that was keeping pressure up
so did the valve and changed to 10w60 and it only drops below 4bar after a good hoon

i dunno TBH, the valve is more of a control and its just a spring. i have always been of the school of thought that if you are getting any pressure the pump is working! if its low then its gonna be the valve. if it drops suddenly turn the engine off lmao you get the idea.

A cavvy 2ltr 16v and the story above is basically what happened I think i'm going to take it ack to the garage anyway as it's under warrenty with them for the work done and if the **** it the pay not me lmao

ive done the washer trick and mine wont go below 3.5 bar even when freakishly hot. 6 bar when revved.

I started having low pressure probs after a head rebuild and running on crap oil for a while, I also had a oil cooler prob as well. Removed cooler and flushed system and put new oil in and 90% back to normal. Then I spacered the valve after continuous advice from Mr 16vastra and all is well again, most satisfying.

oil will make a difference, as 16vastra said. thin oils will have less pressure when hot.

Well firstly one of the steel pipes that run to the cooler rusted through and leaked. When I tried to remove the pipes it destroyed the ally thread on the cooler so I needed a new cooler and pipes which I found tricky to get 2nd hand for sensible money locally. I was going to get a mocal one and pipes made up but then did get another, so fitted it. And since that point had pressure probs, it would drop the 4th bar at like 3k revs (known bad) and drop to 2 bars idle, comparred to 5 bars always when driving and 4 bars when idleing hot.

I then was told I should have tried to prime the cooler with oil before reconnecting (easier said than done), so did that and no difference. At this point last october/november I think, I sacked it off and removed the cooler for the winter. Since when and doing the washer trick I have returned to perfect oil pressure (touch wood). I'll have another go at flushing the cooler and refitting in about march, when its not so cold outside

Well it's vauxhall oil that is in the car and it was the same oil before that when the oil pressure was ok so i can't see it being the oil. Is it possible for the bit of gasket that fell in the sump could have blocked the relief valve or oil pump at all?
