It needs to be at least 8mm and lots of strands. Have a look at the existing battery lead to the starter. Your cable to the boot wants to have an equal voltage drop so must be that much better. Cheap jump leads are crap. There's too much voltage drop and they get really warm whilst cranking. 500 Amp welding cable is the best. Have a look at the cable BMW use.

I asked nick bout how he done it to his manta sed you can buy earth cable stuf in lengths. Failing that heavy gauge amp wire. I'll try a few car places see if I can get it in lengths. I jsut tried the battery boost cable and it got warm relaively quickly, too dangerous to use that. :( I need some anyway for a second earth.
