Gonna change the sump gasket in the morning on a C20NE, its the metal plate with bonded rubber type. I have been told by three diff people 3 diff things, which would you say is the best?

1. No selant the rubber will seal itself, the sealant has a lower shear strength than the gasket.

2. Sealant all the way round

3. Small smear round bearing and oil pump end

A smear is normally all thats recommended. Put huge dollops of it on and it'll just ooze out into the sump and end up finding it's way into the oil pickup, pump, relief valve etc.

what i did was put one blob, like the sphere the diameter of the end of the nozzle in all 4 places, then smear that, seemed to be just about enough. when you place the gasket down, wipe any that oozes into the block/sump area
