I have bought a non-running 99 Astra 1.7 GM Turbo Diesel which has the following symptoms;

1. Water pipe has split under preasure and covered engine bay with dirty water.

2. Oil in airbox and pipe coming from turbo

3. White smoke comes out the back if trying to tow start, lots of it. Van will splutter but not run.

4. After trying to tow start, many drops of black oil or diesel were over the boot lid.

Is this a sign of something more serious than say a head gasket?

Should I ditch the engine and just put a new one in?

Sure, I will take the head off and have a look, then repost with what I see.

Just a little concerned with the oil in the pipe from the turbo to the airbox, or is this something you would expect with head gasket failure?

P.S, thanks for the parts offer, will let you know as soon as I find out.

Thanks, I'll give the pump timing a try and compression test the cylinders to see what they are at.

Sure it's more than the glowplugs, no chance of it even running when towed a couple of miles.

It has been suggested that the turbo oil seals could be shot, causing oil in the airbox.
Is this crap?
