Hi all, my nova is currently running on the C14se engine. I can get a 1600cc block and suitable transmission for practically nothing.
What kind of an upgrade am i facing? Is it worth the effort?
I also have a 4-1 manifold and a piper cam that will be fitted.

Cheers.

is it on carbs? i can't remember.

if it is running on carbs, of course a 1600 bottom end will be a good upgrade over a 1400, it will have lots more torque. you will need to adjust your carb settings to suit.

if it is on std injection, i think the c14se setup will cope

the c14se block will fit the came transmission as the 1600, its an f13.

There are 2 different 1600cc bottom ends in the UK - small block and big block.

The small block (as per the c14se) was available as a c16se and e16se and in the 16v versions - c14xe, c16xe, x16xe etc. These use a 190mm or 200mm clutch and will use an F10 / F13 / F15 box.

The big block was used as the basis for the 16SV, 16SH, 18SE, 20NE, 20SE (8 v versions), c18XE, c20XE etc (16v versions).. and uses a 216mm or 228mm clutch and needs either an F16 / F18 or F20 box.

Couple of problems in your scenario..

I would think the C14SE and C16SE heads are different to account for the different bore sizes and Id expect the C16se to have bigger valves but I dont know if that is the case.

Similarly, the C14SE ECU and injection setup is for a 1400cc, so id expect the fuelling etc to be setup for that and the injectors to be smaller too.

it might be easier to fine a complete c16se engine rather then a c16se block alone. i have a friend that can find some kind of 1600 block for free but we have no idea the model of the engine he will fine until he actually looks for one.
head and ecu are different off corse but the question is: will the standard c14se engine and ecu perform well will a 1600 block replacement?
i have planty off experience doing such replacements on peougeot (106 in particular) but not on vauxhalls/opels.
