I have a 1995 Astra Caravan 1.7TDS. It has lately developed an unpleasant sound coming from the front left of the car.

English is not my mother tongue, but I'd say the sound is a knocking sound. Thuds, thudding... Not very loud, but there's definitly something wrong with the car. The noise comes from the front left of the car. I believe there is one knock for every rotation of the wheel.

  • Noise level increase when I stop accelerating.
  • Noise level declines when I hit the brakes.
  • Clutching or neutral gear have no effect on noise.
  • Turns don't make a difference either.
  • Noise level increases with increasing speeds, I think.
  • I've had the wheel off, nothing suspicious.
  • Drive axle (CV) boots look good.
  • I jacked the car up and reved it to 100 mph. No knocking sound.
  • Stabiliser bar is not touching the drive shaft.
I would like some advice on how to track down the source of the noise. Where do I start?

The bolts were loose on the right front wheel. My hearing was wrong, I suspected the left hand side.

By the way, the ABS warning lamp illuminated while reving in 5th gear with the front wheels off ground. Disappeared when I switched the engine off and on again.
