how to use body filler ?

before i spray my van i will have to fill the dents obv, some people have said to fut the filler over primer, then primer the filler.
some said to use a flap dink on grinder to bare metal it then filler then acid etch primer.
which is the best way ?
and what grade of sanding disks should i use with DA sander to sand down the filler ?

Filler should go on to bare metal, otherwise you risk the edge showing over time. 80 grit for a rough pass then move up to 180 then 320. Then primer then carefully flat back if neccessary with 400 or 600.

as above, onto clean rust free bare metal.

Use a large flat block to to all the final sanding to get it flat.

once i have sanded it, is it just a case of checking by eye that its flat ?

You can use a guide coat, lightly spray over the top, then when you sand it you'll see any low bits as the colour will stay on them.

I always went by touch - if you can feel it, you can see it.
