Question How do you pull out damage..........?

Someone hit me in the door few weeks back. It wasnt too bad but it pushed 1 of the door hinges in by about 1 inch. The guy admitted to having no insurance and paid me £200 on the spot. Anyway.....

My question is, how do bodyshops pull this out?

Could i try myself with a slide hammer? or how much would a bodyshop jig it out for roughly? Would prefferably try repair it myself as i have repaired alot of things in the past. Wouldnt mind giving it a go.

    For panels:
either vacuum things (like for carrying windows),
drilling a hole + screwing through and pulling,
or welding a stud (or sticking an elektrode to the panel) and pulling.

    All depends on the damage.
Hinges itself could be more difficult, and not do-able for 200 pounds...

Painting alone could be worth more.
Note: the above may or may not be entirely correct.
I wondered why the frisbee was getting bigger, and then it struck me.

Strip the door down and have a look to see what you can get behind it. I'm thinking things like blocks of wood and wedges or a sill jack jammed inside to push it back into shape.

In my experience a body shop wouldn't bother repairing a door unless it's impossible to find a replacement. Often the labour cost would be more so a new door just gets bolted on. I'm looking at a similar problem now with a Corsa I've just bought - it'll be cheaper to find a second hand wing and door and get them sprayed than pay someone to try and take the bend out, spend hours getting it flat with filler etc. Perhaps this is a possible for you? You might even find a door in a scrapper that's a near enough colour match!

    Thanks for the replies.

Its not actually the door hinge thats dented in. Ihave a new door. Its where the door hinge bolts to on the car.... That is pushed in. Ive pulled the inner panels off and i can get to the pushed in damage from behind but, ive had a block in behind it and tried to hammer it out without success. It is rock solid.

I just dont know if a slide hammer will have enough power to pull it out.

    Photo!

Normally I'd recommend chaining it to a skip and driving off, but that might be overkill in this case lmao

LOL i thought of that. But was thinking a tow rope around my van then yank it out.

As to the other comments above yes its the pillar pushed in slightly.

Cant do pics yet as i need to take the door off again and its a 2 man job due to the weight of it.

have to ask, did you report the chap to the police for having no insurance?

also you could try sliding a plate down the rear of the beam and one onto the front to sandwich it and drill hole right the way though both every say 5 inch, put some good nut and bolt in and tighten up (working like a vice) till it flattens and pulls the shape back.

Use a good bit of hard wood between the old door and the flange of the pillar. Push the door closed and the wood will be a pivot and could pull the hinge out.

If that fails, you will need to chain in down and pull it with a pulling systemn no jig needed!
