Once you know how to, it's fairly easy, like all things. getting started may take some time, depending on who's teaching you.

apart from scratch-start tig machines, you probably won't find 'em "on a budget". And I'd stay away from those (owning one myself, among others).
Note: the above may or may not be entirely correct.
I wondered why the frisbee was getting bigger, and then it struck me.

why do you say to stay away from scratch start tig machines?
when i first started to learn tig welding that all i used and did so for a few years and now when im learning the young guys at work i teach them on the scratch starts.
but i`d agree button start tig machines are much better but for some1 wanting to learn tig welding id say go out and buy a cheap tig for a couple of 100 quid and get into it

If you have to learn scratch-start by yourself (and that's how's he going to do it by the sounds of it), you're going to make horrible beginnings with that. A High-frequent is sooo much easier to learn/begin with, so I'd recommend that.
Also, for automotive work like stainless exhausts for example, you sure don't want that into your base metal.

If you don't have the money, get one of those, and have someone helping you for a few afternoons. It won't be easy going on yourself.
And a Tig welder is generally a good investment, spend a bit more and you'll have more options as well (up/downslope and aftergas, or however it's called in english). That's worth waiting a few months longer getting one of those.

imo you won't get a good ac/dc tig set for less than a grand, you need a steady hand and plenty of patients with tig, but once you've got the angles etc it's easy

Its like rubbing your belly and patting your head lol. Wen i learnt it took alot of patience you wil think your never going to get the hang of it but dont give up and once you got it u need to keep th practice up. I would go for a portable arc welder for a couple hundred then jus buy a tig set for it, torch etc. Probably one of th cheaper ways.

yups, but that (almost always) means a scratch start machine...

    Re: Tig welding- how easy?

meaning you've got to strike the arc about the same way as with welding rods.
Which is mostly a bad thing because your tungsten electrodes will wear much quicker, and if you don't use a cupper start plate you'll have tungsten inclusions in your weld pool ...
And after all it isn't that easy as it seems.

Positive side is that you can use about any cheapo inverter, a scratch start torch costs about 150-200 € so somewhere over 100 GBP.

I've got one that I only use when somewhere else (so I'm not using it that much), but even after a few years I'm still not confident with it.
My Hi-frequency machine at home does get used quite a bit, and (also because it's a far better qality welder) I like it much better than the scratch start.

I got me one of them £200 chinky 'Giant' DC machines off ebay to learn to tig, and it's been awesome so far. +it does mma (arc). So i'd say get one of them, don't spend too much on it - you might hate it. I'd suggest putting money into a good gas supply set-up instead, them disposables are a rip off.

    Re: Tig welding- how easy?

Welder came with all the kit and was about £200 delivered, disposable gas regulator was about £20, and bottles are about £12 depending on where you buy them. You need a mask too - get one of them automatic dimming ones, I've got a ****ty flip down and been blinding myself for 4 years, keep meaning to get one lol.
I worked out the other day a disposable bottle gives you 6 minutes of constant welding, depending on what flow rate you've set. So that's **** really, but it's the cheapest way to get going. The consumable cost is why I prefer mma (arc) - it does everything other than bodywork.
I've been trying to tig for ages now and can't get the bloody hang of it, and it's too slow, so went back to arc - why I suggest not spending out on a super machine to start with
