TBH mate if this is the first time doing it I wouldn't risk it. If you dont get the prep and priming perfect you will be throwing money down the toilet by getting it painted.

if your doing it you will need to star off with probly 600s wet untill the paint is flat then go over with 1500s wet then 2000s wet have you got a compresser? and can you spray?
if not i wouldent bother because rattle can paint uses different thinners to normal paint so the base paint will react with the primer. i allways paint my own stuff but when it goes wrong its harder to fix than to just have it done professionaly

500 dry the whole car ready for paint. old school way 800 wet. dont need to go bare metal just a good key, then give the car to him to primer it white. dont do it your self unless you have the right set up.

i wouldn't prime it yourself, i'm guessing you'd do it with cans which can actually react with proper paint

also if you don't have a clue how to do the prep them don't bother, 95% of a good paint job is down to the prep, if this isn't done properly then the paint work won't be the best, also if you've done the prep a painter won't guarentee the paintwork

i'm setting up my own bodyshop at the minute and we don't wet sand anything, its not really needed, 320 grit on a da sander, then 5-600 on a da sander, clean off car, high build prime, depending on the colour the car is and what colour its going determins the colour of the primer, i stock grey primer and just add colour to colour it, once primed it is sanded with 6-800 grit on da and then 1000 grit, then clean off and ready for paint, but all bodyshops have their own procedure

It's one of those things that you can't be good at without experience.

again as above, if you have to ask what grades to sand the paint down with then i wouldn't bother, the prep work has to be done properly to get a good finish

If you are using isolator/barrier (when the paint underneath is dodgy), does this go on before high build primer, and should etch primer be used still on bare bits?

personally i remove all dodgey paintwork, not worth leaving an risking it messing up the paintjob, i etch all bare metal and then shoot a good few thick coats of high build which can be da'd/blocked

    My advice is this.
Dont ask on here, but ask the bloke who is painting it for his advice.
    See what he wants

what condition is the car in? if its just a colour change you just need to key the surface. the more work required the harsher you have to get with the sand paper (ie if work is required on wing)

for a colour change you will have to do all door shuts panel gaps etc. the engine bay would be engine out job to get it the same colour. its really not worth it on a mk3 (buy the car in the colour you want it will be cheaper)

as for priming if you can see any imperfection it will show up. if you feel any imperfection it will show up.

basically if you are priming it and someone is painting it ask them if they will look it over and if its crap start again
