What mask have you used with 2k paint??

Hi all
I know your meant to use a proper air fed mask when using 2 pack paint but just wondering what you have all used?

As the car has a wide arch kit im keeping the rears arches/wings bolt on so ill spray it all in small amounts such as front wings, rear wings, doors, bonnet, boot then ill do the rest of the car + i can do it over a week or 2 to reduce exposure to fumes

3m sell a mask called the 7500 series for around 30 pounds (twin filters and extremley good ,! ) cotton filter ??? dont your lungs mean more to u than that ???? the stuff in 2 k is lethal to say the least ,

don't forget if you get 2k on your skin also it can get in your blood stream, good set of gloves and protective clothing will be a good idea also.

2k is evil stuff, i'd recommend a decent rubber mask, unless your spraying it outside, in which case you'll probably be ok.
a mate of mine sprayed his SIIA in his small garage using 2k without mask... he walked ouside afterwards and passed out lmao

i only use that if i can be arsed otherwise i dnt bother, im still young enough not to care lol

you ever seen overspray??? goes on skin as well as car panels, i was ok as the father in law was a traffic cop at the time so he got me a few paper suits from the local nick...lol

was pullin your chain been paintin for 24 yrs so i know how bad it is ( and also know part number for 3m mask another hint ) !!!would strongly recommend only usin a air fed mask if usin 2 k and clearcoat . BUT many folks on here dont have have the access to a compressor which would provide another air for the mask and spray gun at same time or the proper spray oven / its all bits and bobs as to say and a twin mask would surfice , of course if a neighbour smelt it or had his wasshin out when someone was paintin in the garage or outside, it could be interestin for both health and safety and gettin them clothes clean again lol

wasn't having a go mate....lol. we have a lad up the road who is spraying 2k every day, had the coucil round twice looking which isn't good as i have a polish and porting lad in my garage i use..lol

doesn't 2k come under the Hazchem regulations in that it will go from liquid particles to solid within X amount of feet and so long as there is no chance of contaminating the water in the area it's fine to vent to atmo?

I'm sure it came up when I was reading the regs a few months ago.

I'm with dark horse on this one.

Don't want to sound like one of those boffins in white coats, but 2k is deadly. It has Iscocyanides in it which is lethal to humans, basically it has cyanide in it. And what kind of pills do spy's take to kill themselves???? Too much exposure can and will mess up your organs big time. Not just your lungs, Nervous system, eyesight oh and if some of you have girlfiends you wouldn't want your tackle to let you down now would you? Oh yes and there's the cancers to think of to.

The paper masks you talk about are for dust particles, ie rubbing down or when using panel wipe. As for water based paints not sure about them.

As for spraying outside the typical diyer would be in contravention of many environmental laws, if caught could go to prison. It's all to do with the ammount of contaminents that go into the atmosphere, it has to be controlled. Thats why they took the cfc's out of spray cans.

If anyone is interested in the rules and regulations of it all, i'm sure I could get the info for you.

I would like to see the paperwork to back that up as I have read the hazchem sheets on most of the chemicals I have in my possesion and checked out the environmetal legislations too, basically what you are saying is that we could go to jail for spraying paint, which is wrong, the environment are only interested in VOCs and solvent content of said paint, fact of the matter is that 2k solidifies within around 10ft which renders it pretty much harmless to the environment.

Ok Gaz prison is probably the last resort of a local authority to punish an individual, but they take a very dim view on a blatant disregard to the environment, waste, contamination and Health + Safety. Forgot to ask and mention, what type of equipment will you be using make/model. HVLP? or is it an old school gun? Remember the more efficient your equipment the better for you.
Like the smart repair painters they have their restrictions to and they have top notch equipment. Plus they are not permitted to do full re-sprays

What about your waste materials? i.e. paint and contaminated materials, tack cloths, panel cloths, wet + dry. Don't forget the amount of effort required to dispose of all this, it has to be labelled correctly because it cannot be put in with the household waste. Ask your local council for best advice.

If you are spraying in a lock up far from buildings and the populus then you'll probably get left alone. But if your doing it outside your house in a residential area then that's a different cuttle of fish.

Remember an employer has a duty of care to his/her employees. So if you are doing a job for yourself (technically your self employed) and as such you have the responsibility of ensuring the well being and safe keeping of your surroundings, this includes the environment and the health + safety of others around you.

I'm not a company and I have no waste considered to be hazardous, waste management is for companies who churn out a lot, I knock out the odd bit of brown paper with cured paint on the back of it, I take it that's hazardous? better warn every motorist out there driving around with a large court summons attatched to their vehicles.

also no I'm not self employed by doing my own work I'm just doing my own work, that's like saying I'm self employed for making myself a cuppa as it's a butlers job.

the Environment agency aren't bothered about someone spraying in their yard nor will they prosecute, I am not causing a contamination to the water supply and none of my chemicals end up seeping into landfills, if something leaves me it leaves as a solid state product that could quite easily be chucked in anyones garbage.

you're fighting a losing battle with me as I know what the councils will and wont persue as I have personally contacted them in the past regarding this.

facts
you need no qualifications to buy 2k products
you need no training to handle 2k products
chances are the car you drive around in or parts you've binned have 2k products on them

erm no mask = very poorly and only did the bonnet doctors said something along the lines of cyanide but was too out of it to remember the rest was very lucky not to have been more affected

suffered memory loss voilently sick for days trouble with my sight very bad headache for about a week that nothing could ease

Yes everything we do in our daily lives contaminates the environment one way or another, if you read between the lines it's about reduction and prevetion rather than cure.

You wouldn't drive your car to a landfill once you had enough of it. You'd probably take it to a scrappy and get it disposed in the proper manor.
