yeah a few coats will smooth out roughness just let it cure before you apply the next coat, those tins don't go too far though.

as for rust you can't get to try chipping as much off with a screwdriver/chisel and try to get it as clean as you can then the kurust should sink into whatever is left.

Yehh it won't be a smooth finish but I'm thinking of the extra protection. Just something I thought of

Im going to see if i can get pictures of it done first just to make my mind up. The stone chip on my crossmember is not very good, i ran my finger over it will little bit of force and it started to peel up, is it meant to do that or meant to be stronger

Here is how the bay stands at the moment. I am going to etch primer the slam panel area which is bare metal, then i will filler primer over the rest of it. But what im a bit concerned about is this crossmember, the stone chip is completely dry but its awfull soft and dont feel right to me. Should i apply wayoyl/underseal over the stone chip and then paint over with the flame red ??

Gaz what would you suggest to do then mate, what ways are there around it, what can I do apart from filler over the rust. Is this beige hammerite treatment any good though mate, don't fancy buying more if mines upto the job.
I just checked on what I use and it's Kurust from hammerite, the only other I've heard of is the green stuff that eats the rust but that take forever, I'd invest in some heavy wire wheel heads for your power drill or if it's really bad mounted wire wheels for your grinder, that will get you as near to rustless as you can get and then rust treat the area before priming and painting.

    You can't paint over waxoyl.

Glad you didn't filler over the rust, that will guarantee it comes back in a few months. The Hammerite No.1 you used is ok but not the best, Bonda Rust Primer is better. I wouldn't bother with etch primer on the new metal, just use more of the No.1 or Bonda if you change to that. Especially as the new metal has now been sat for a bit in this damp weather it will have begun to rust ever so slightly.

As for the stone chip, doesn't sound good. I would take it all off and use more No.1 or Bonda.
