what metal is this

it is magnetic and when heated it makes a white layer onto of the metal but it cant be welded with a mig welder i need to ad a section onto this it is the throttle lever arm off a bike throttle boddie and it isnt ally cheers james

Is it maybe steel with a zinc passivate coating? looks kind of yellow? try cleaning it up with a grinder first

yeah tyhat must be it i did clean it up but the weld just didnt seem to want to penatrate will give it another go cheeers mate

I haven't ever done aluminised steel but I'd take it to somewhere I could tig it. I'm not sure if the coating (whatever it is) could be skimmed off and then weld the steel underneath or if it's "mixed" with the steel ie the same throughout

Sounds like it is passivated, the weld just sits on top and bubbles up. Aluminised steel does the same like the length's of exhaust tubing

Aye worth a try, as Nemesis said tho if its a metal mixed in with the steel then it wont work.
Probably just going to be coated steel if its a mass produced part.

aluminised and zinc galvanised are just a coating so should be fine when cleaned up. if it's not, then it's an iron alloy with a lot of something in it.

Could also be stainless, though quite unlikely.

decent stainless isn't magnetic though, only the semi-stainless nickel free ones are iirc,

ground it back plentey and cleaned it up and it welded spot on in the end cheers guys james
