Take the car to the person who's painting it and ask what he'd like you to do

He may want glass out, bumpers off etc. He may see dents you cannot even see!
For the love of God, please read the rules

rear windows are bonded in so you'll need to just mask em up, rust needs stripping right out to the point you will need to use filler, if you're unsure on what to do but you have rust you really need the guy there with you talking you through it and giving you pointers or you'll end up with a shiny car for about 2 weeks then a shiny car with loads of sink marks and rust bubbles.

Remove all the glass, will look crap other wise.

320grit min anything that's gonna be painted. As rust needs bare metalling and treating/killing before etch primer and normal primer.

So? It will look utter sh*t with tape lines from leaving the glass in.

Rear is just a rubber, sides are glueded in but you can cut the glue off to remove them...

    Re: Preping a car for re-spray ?

trust me remove the windows and rubbers, you will get a lip otherwise and the paint will flake off from the lip of paint, all rubbers need to be removed, and if your just having a blow over then use grey scotchbrite pad and go over whole car to get the shiney finish off the car so the paint has a key surface. any rust grind back to metal and fill. if the cars going to be stood for a while spray over some laquer to stop it rusing as primer absorbs water(this is where a few people go wrong and thing why has it rusting back through the next day). if the sprayer is a good one he will see imperfections you wont, its all in the prep work that you get a good job, if it turns out sh!t its probably due to poor prep work.

another thing is remove all bumpers, skirts, everything, as i said above anywhere where there will be a lip of paint is bad news, it will start peeling over time.

your sprayer will probably tell you this but dont worry too much about orange peel, some see it and go aaahhhh, but a quick wet sand and some G3 followed by G10 soon sorts it.

Lastly make sure your prep work is spot on, this is where a job is good or bad 9 times out of 10

Good bit of advice there. Sorry to hijack but i have a few rust spots and bubbling in places, would you suggest getting a blow over or just concentrate on the bad bits and have them blown over.

    Re: Preping a car for re-spray ?

Never tried the 3m stuff but heard good reports.we just soft edge with masking tape and never have any problems but to be fair it won't cost u much to get windows taken in/out and will make ur life much easier.great advice from turbojay, will try the laquer trick on primer myself!!
