painting with laquer runs! need abit of advice

repainted and colour coded my bumper,s all fine, asked my mate who works at a body shop how to get rid of orange peel effect . . . he said more laquer, this was done, but stupidly i didnt really wait for the other laquer t dry, i have a THICK layer of laquer on there, but it no also has a few filthy runs
can ijust sand it down and polish em out with some g3? he said to do this but just wanna make sure. .
also what grit paper to use? 1500 wet n dry or higher i guess?

    thanks

If you have runs then it tells you the coat was way to heavy, build up with light coats, paitence is the key to a good finish lol. As for getting them out i would say the finest wet & dry you can use, making sure not to sand into to paint colour, and then laquer over.

If im incorrect someone will correct me mate.
    Good luck.

haha cheers mate, i think putting on too much is a serious UNDERSTATEMENT LOL
tbh there is easily enough laquer for me to take a good few mm off it
all im worried about is the finish of laquer being uneven, after sanding, but still could take it to my mates work to be relaquered, am sure he would do it for free
    cheers

1500 wet/dry will be fine.use a rubbing down block on the runs so not to rub through.g3should take it all away with a bit of buffer work!

I just used filler primer to get rid of the plastic texture a few coats of it then 3 paint and 2 lacquer and looks fine.

For the record, I've rubbed out excessive orange peel on an entire bootlid with 1200 wet and dry and polished it back up nicely by hand with G3 without too much effort so 1500 or greater should be even easier!

thats the thing with laquer mate it runs so easly, all you have to do is put a couple of coat rely fine, then when its tacky not fully dry give it a gd thick coat, it shouldent run if you do it properly because of the tacky coat underneath its just all about taking your time and not rushing into it, took me 3 days to completely re-do both back and front bumpers but the finish is like glass, when polished i can see my face in it

1500 on thick runs and you'll be there all day, do what the pros do and go right in with the 240 and build up to the 12-1500 grits.

240 grit will just put big grooves in the laquer in no time. shouldnt take too long to sand out with some 1200 w.d, then 1500 . If they are reeealy thick runs then could start out with 800 but wouldnt really go any lower then that on new paint.

depends how you handle the paper, 240 is fine hell I've used 120 no problems to cut runs from new laquer, no point rubbing all day with 1500 to make it look like there was once a run that has just been smoothed over, might aswell get rid of it.

Make sure to keep cleaning the wet and dry in a bucket of water and keep checking the paper for dirt so as not to put scratches into the laquer.

I wouldn't use anything lowering the 1200, but that's me.

When painting tho you cant just do light coats. as you wont get the shine up you do need lay on heavy coats on.
