Yea use etch on bare metal, then primer dont flat the etch and dont put it on too thick, a nice dust coat all thats needed. also dont use zinc primer.

etch onto bare clean metal then a nice high build primer.

P.S. why do people still paint cars matt? satin is a much nicer and sealed finish, youve only gotta touch mat and theres a greasy blob on it lmao

Make sure you get rid of all rust first!

rust is like cancer... is you dont get rid of it competey it will keep coming back... best thing to do it cut it out and replace it... but it you want to try cover it again, use oxy primer on the bare metal, and then build it up with normal primer before painting..

the key is to get rid of the rust as best you can prior to painting, i find shotblasting to be the most effective way. if you dont want to spend big bucks on shotblasting setup you can use a spot blaster to do small areas, reasonably quick an makes little mess, http://www.expresstools.co.uk/shopscr3989.html
I have one similar to that for small jobs an it gives great results.

after the shotblasting, the steel wants treating ASAP, before moisture starts the rust process again, i use a treatment called metalguard thats like a blue transparent varnish, found it to be excellent at preventing further corrosion. Soon after i then put a few coats of high build primer directly onto that then it can be flatted and prepared for base coat.
I use UPOL 20:20 primer, can be built up thick on badly pitted areas and after flatting is like new. Ive had really good result using that process.
