    Welding near petrol tank

What are the concerns of welding near the petrol tank. I've wanted to weld under the rear bench, and I know the tank is directly below.
Also welding the arch with the filler cap on, what procedures should I take before I blow myself up?

Filling the tank right up would be a good idea.

It'll be empty, but you can't really get it empty of fumes, etc.

Can if you fill it. Empty it will be full of them, won't it?

Saying that, there's nothing to taking it off.

I'd say having a full tank is worse than having an empty tank??

The vapour is explosive. Full of petrol (liquid) won't leave much room for the explosive vapour. Just my thoughts.

I was hoping there would be some other way, hate taking the tank off.
If it was full of petrol, it wouldn't be full of explosive vapour, but full of explosive liquid, capable of rupturing the tank!!

If it's anything like the Astra Mk2 the tank presses right against the floorpan so welding would be risky IMO. Also, you would ideally paint the underside of where you welded afterwards or it will just all corrode out, so you'd need the tank off to get at that.

How about the arch on the filler side? That should be okay though? I'm just taking procautions.
