Rattle can spraying - diffrent colour finish

    Hey all,

Well Christmas and new year have nearly made me skint so decided the car (now nicknamed project pointless 2 by the locals) will have to wait for a re-spray till nearer summer so ill colour code the gsi kit myself using the dreaded halfrauds spray cans (and its buy 2 get 1 free so seemed like a good deal).

Saying that Ive had good results so far with them (until now) on my old Nova Sr when it needed touching up.

Prepped the lot up and used the spoiler as a tester and this is how its went.

Spoiler was prepped up and then sprayed with a coat of grey plastic primer. Then the Flame Red about 24hrs later. Problem is that the colour is too dark compared to the car and looks dull.

So had another go using a white primer but this time it looks too bright and stands out even more.

The cars bodywork looks near new colour wise so I’m just suprised it isn’t even a match atall.

Hs anyone got any tips on how to get it looking ok till I can afford the re-spray in the summer?? Is there something I’m doing wrong or using the wrong colour primer??? Any help would be appreciated.

    Cheers

    Bladez

Maybe you're putting it on too thinly if the primer coat affects the final colour ...........

I've done this on the little rear quarter on my GSi (below the lights) as a dented it. Filled it, primered it, and sprayed it. It looks 'browny'. I applied about eight-ten coats, it looked fine. The rear end had been resprayed with the smooth boot, so it fits in no problem, and it's red. Halford's paint is 99% matched from my experience.

Red is a pain to match. If you go to a bodyshop they will probably have at least 20 shades of Flame Red available. But reds do have very poor coverage so it will need several coats.

Have a look in the Halfords colour charts - for each shade of paint they tell you which primer to use to get the correct colour. Probably that brickwork colour primer for yours or maybe grey.

How many layers of paint are you applying ? The paint in cans can be very thin...

It won't make a difference what colour primer is used as long as enough paint goes on. Just go over it with some P1000, clean it and the add a few more coats of topcoat.

Well since there was some good weather I had another go :

Sprayed on another 6 coats to the spoiler and it looks good-ish

Ran out of primer so grabbed some from halfrauds but tryed the red oxide coloured stuff and sprayed up the bumpers and sideskirts.

On with the dodgy flame red and after about 4-5 coats it was done and again a good-ish match

Tbh there was no diffrence in the endup colour and Im happy now since I dont have a dodgy brown colour anymore. will try and get some pics up

Now to give the car a good cut and polish - take out the 2ltr 8v lump - spray the engine bay, that'll be fun but only the wing tops will be sprayed and the rest cut back and slot in the xe ready for the summer season

    Cheers for the advice lads
