    Help with painting

I'm going to paint my arches and the black bits on the bumper because they are almost completely white/grey. I've bought some plastic primer, sanded the arches smooth and primed them. Now, I'm not so sure about the next step...If I buy some celulose paint from halfords or a paint supplier and spray on a few coats, what do I do about laquer? Do I need to get some celulose laquer then spray that on?

Somebody told me to paint them with a 1K basecoat then use celulose laquer. I dont have any breathing stuff and I dont fancy dying over some arches, so I'm not so sure about using 2K paint.

2 Pack (2K) basecoat isn't really 2K. 2 pack means you need to use a hardner. Its a high solid acrylic or polyester basecoat which is compatible with 2 pack primers and clear coats. You can spray a modern basecoat without needing the full air fed respirator and then finish it with 1K clear (acrylic lacquer). Again just the usual precautions you'd take when spraying cellulose are fine with this. Anything with a hardner is dodgy because thats what has the isocyanates in it which are what kill you. Some people call HS basecoats 2K base coats because they are designed to be used as part of a 2K system.

1K clear is better than celly as its slightly harder wearing, slightly less lightly to fade, slightly cheaper, and less likely to react with other materials.

I would go to a proper paint supplier not halfords. They only sell celly and charge £25 a litre for it. My local paint factor charges £12 a litre for celly and £6 a litre for 1K clear and about £18 a litre for HS basecoat.

The regular basecoat with 1K clear will give the best colour, shine and finish without going to a full 2 pack system.

You can still get 1K basecoats but they are not as good as the HS basecoats and the number of colours available is less. Someone may have meant HS basecoat without hardner when they said 1K to you. My local paint factor only sells 1K colours to people painting industrial machinery now.

I dont have metalic paint, I think its perl, I think. Vauxhall Arden blue is the name, i think the code is 12L(?).

So basically if I get some HS basecoat, put on a couple of layers of that on, then spray some 1K clearcoat it should turn out alright and I wont die? Also, with the 1K clearcoat & HS basecoat do I need to leave each coat exposed to some heat to help them dry?

    Re: Help with painting

heat helps everything dry. Especially that this time of year.

regular basecoat and 1K clear coat is fine for DIY with a normal charcoal filter mask like you'd use for celulose. Thats what I'd recommend you do.

if you use 1K clear try and leave some heat on in the garage overnight as 1K clear can bloom, not as bad as cellulose does, but it can still do it. And that sucks.
