tips on spraying high build primer

im going to spray my car in high build primer and just wanted to know if there was anything i need to do before spraying it, the car does have polyester spray filler on the rear quarters will i have to put the car in a booth to dry it out before using high build or can it just be sparyed with high build and then into booth, it may need drying as its been kept in a cold garage for a few weeks also wet and dry was used on the polyester filler doesnt look or feel wet though

also how is high build primer mixed and do they vary in their quality

80 * 20 believe most are mixed. Their's not really any fine art to spraying primer jsut make sure the car is perfectly prepped. Bumpers u need a plastic primer, or any other plastic.

Personnally I would re-do the filler, just to be safe.

Is the primer 1K or 2K? Are you spraying onto bare metal, old paint or what?

bigbard what do youmean by already preped i thought the preping 9is the flatting down of the high build primer

mike 007 what do you mean by redo the filler you not referring to the filler on the rear quarter ie the polyester filler if you are then im f***** causes that took many hours to get right and was all rubbed down by hand no electric tools

will be spraying onto the polyester filller and other areas are primer and some parts of the car the origional paint but flatted down

whats the difference between the 1k and 2k

Yes, I did mean the filler on the rear quarter. If you don't want to redo it, then stick it in an oven at a raised temperature for a while.

If the rest of the car was flatted down a few weeks ago as well it will be best to redo it and then go over it with panel wipe.

    Sorry - 1K = 1 pack, 2K = 2 pack.

i will put it back into an oven but can it be done once the high build has been sprayed onto it and will i need to flat the whole car again or just use panel wipes

Re: tips on spraying high build primer

The problem is that filler absorbs moisture, so if it has been sat in a cold, damp garage for a few weeks it is likely this has happened. If you stuck it in the oven after the primer you would have already 'sealed in' the moisture. If you are seeling the car then don't worry about it, but if you are keeping it then it really needs to go in the oven before primer. As I said, if it were my car I would prefer to redo the filler just to be safe (but then my car is made of Italian metal lmao lmao ).

And yes, it is best to re-flat the whole of the car I'm afraid. However, all the hard work has been done so you only need to go over it very quickly. Panel wipe once this is done.

    Good luck.

problem is where its going to sprayed with high build there is no booth i could drop it in the booth but would have to drive it to where it would have to be primed so id be back to square one as id presume 20 mins of driving would cause the primer to reabsorb the moisture

No, that shouldn't be a problem. Not ideal if it's raining, but still probably better than weeks in a damp garage.

that isn't such a bad idea!! i've seen places where u can buy cling film type stuff exactly for that purpose (to cover up prepped areas ready for painting that u want to keep moisture away from) Might be worth giving a go??

Just done a quick search for ICI Formula 1. I was right - it is a cellulose 1 pack primer-filler. It's dirt cheap too (about £5-6 a litre or something). It will be OK, but personnally if you are going to the trouble of taking it to a body shop I'd want 2-pack.
