Your friend's advice should be avioded. 2-pack is very durable.

Which would a pro body-shop spray? 2-pack. Why? Because the finish is far better out of the gun than acrylic or cellulose.

2 pack is a lot harder than cellulose

if u have the working environment ie vaccum and dust free with a decent few £k spray gun then by all means do a 2 pack

2 Pack Hardener is really dangerous stuff.

If you are doing it out side you want At LEAST a Charcoal cannister mask.

Inside you want an Air Fed respirator with Charcoal cannister.

Cellulose is far less hazardous, and a Charcoal cannister mask will do.

2 pack is good but WILL kill you if you breathe it in. Never the less, it gives excellent shiney results, without having to G3 it till you're red in the face.

I felt very sick for a couple of days after spraying a mini without air feed

Re: which paint is better 2 pack or base and laquer

just went round the car using 800 wetndry and rubbed the shine off the paint then resprayed

the spray gun cost like £40 and the compressor cost £40

i got it from a car paint shop in bromsgrove

used cutting compound from halfords and t cut with some resin polish to protect the paint

u just use a lot of elbow grease in rubbing it down and cutting the paint

just use your original paintwork as primer if spraying same colour otherwise u will need to rub it down even more perhaps to the metal and prime the lot

with rust i used 150 wetndry, I did a user guide on using filler on roybacer

So you used cellulose then? Did you laquer it or just use solid colour?? (ephidor) looks good, how long did it take you to get the shine using cutting compund?

For a pearl flick you'll be using base+laquer anyway, as 2 pack is for solid colours.

Thought it was a 2 pack base coat and 2 pack lacquer anyhows!

Defo heed the advice about the mask as a min requirement, you can go into a fit at a hint of that gear sometimes. Although ui think they do air drying 2packs now which are a lot safer, although still not that safe.

Can also be harmful to pets and small children even at a short distance, last thing you need is a neighbour's dog or worse still child getting ill from it, especially if the neighbour clocks what you are upto and points the finger.

2 pack is a paint system ,celly, synthetic are paint systems as well.most modern car finishes are 2 pack you will strugle to find modern colours in celly paint system.99.9%work done at my garage/body shop uses 2 pak system from start to finish.base coat is simply the colour without the shinny stuff in it that gets added later and is harder wearing

Re: which paint is better 2 pack or base and laquer

I painted my car with a 2Pak solid colour 2.5litres of it. Didn't use any laquer over the top as there was no need to use it with a solid coulor. Laquer is only needed on mettalic colours. I sanded the whole car down with p400 DA disks (DA- Dual action sander).

Do this all over then buy some tack rags and go over the whole car before u paint it. Then away u go with the paint, it doesn't really matter how bad ur painting skills are it cud turn out all dull and not a shine on the car, even if u get some runs in it u can still flat the runs out with some p1500's wet and dry paper and then buff it up and it will be perfect.

When u have painted it u need to Flat it down using the 1500's paper wet, do it all over and wipe it using a rubber block to see where the orange peel still is. Then Buff the whole car with a big grinder and a G-mop on the end of it, And use G3-cutting compound to bring it up like glass. This is what i did on all my cars, heres one of them.

Its all 2 pak....with any metallic or pearl you will need a base coat, and the lacquer is 2 pak. Vauxhall did experiment with a single coat metallic IIRC on 1990 ish astras and is was ****. Cellulose is only any good if you havent got a respiratot coz it isnt as dangerous as 2 pak, its easier to get hold of and use than 2 pak and its ok for some thinfgs but isnt hard wearing.

2 pak is the best and only thing to use IMO, for a really shiny finish use good quality lacquer and apply a few good coats, then flat it all back using 2000 grit, then polish it with a cutting compound and polishing machine, that way it will be totally smooth.

Two pack proper goes on thick and hard, no spray issues from the gun, and flat down before it sets. IE it gives a cracking finish from the gun. BUT for the reason stated here, it is dangerous, but that aside it is very , very brittle. stone chips become 10mm dia.
