In fact just go for one of these!

Everyone knows the older and more abused the engine is, the better lmao

Who gives a funk about clearances and bore wear when you can just be ignorant and have an old engine! lmao

Z20LET = Smoother, more reliable, newer and more likely to be ~200bhp than a C20LET.

    It was funny wasn't it?

May I point to the MOT tester's handbook at this point:

Test according to which is older, engine or vehicle.
e.g. A 1995 car fitted with a 1991 engine (of whatever make), test to 1991 standards for emission purposes.

Note: The onus is on the vehicle presenter
    to prove engine age.

    the point here people just to point it out is;

fit the engine out of current daily driver which is a calibra c20 let (as andy said running phase 3 im sure) that is in very good condition, no known faults and wayne knows the history of.

    or

buy a technically unkown engine. and by unknown i mean a z20 let from a car which hes never lived with day in day out or really knows the history of.

that was the original question, not which is a better engine c20 or z20.

so i think the obvious and most senseable answer would be to put in his c20 let.

Im gonna agree with nemesis here, put a Z20LET in. Can pick them up just as cheap, if you can get a Z20LEH engine then even better, no balancer shaft and stronger pistons and oil squirters, aka the best engine over them all. Why didnt you buy a coupe turbo to start though Wayne? save all the hassle?

Back on topic btw, anymore and I'll remove them. You're not answering the OP's question and clouding the issue with misinformation.

Forgot that bit, much cheaper to just swap the engine over from both cars. Will be a first too a C20 in a coupe.

You will need more than the engine number, as that wont tell a tester what year the engine is from.

And I just phoned my Fathers garage and asked the testers there, you will need documentary evidence to prove the age of the engine.

So it's a case of proving the age of the engine with documentation, or just having the test carried out to the standards of the year of the car. Which prior to 09/02 is .3 and after is .2

well if he really wanted to, as its his current car that will most probably be scrapped after removing the engine, he could always photo copy the v5 for any future mots as proof of where the engine came from.

Ah so he isn;t even keeping the cally afterwards, well he'll be quids in then frankly, money from the scrap etc of the cally and whatever he makes from the 1.8 engine he pulls out. Im gonna offer my services up for any weekend this happens as never been involved in anything like this and love getting my mits dirty.

If he has the original, he should use that, it is unlikely they would accept a copy as they are so easily manipulated.

It may well pass without pointing out that it's an older engine anyway.

should hand it in when scrapping, but as that engine never ever came as standard on a coupe, he shouldnt have a problem having to prove that.

Thanks for your thoughts guys, just so everyone knows my cally that the engine is in was the car I really wanted for a while it's just that I find the astra coupe a lot more comfortable, and its a lot newer car. As we all know the Z20let is supposed to be easier to tune to a higher level, even with that in mind. I already have a reliable, proven C20let and it is holding 18psi and over boosting to 22psi with no sign of anything untoward. So although the Z20let is a straight swap and the cally wouldn't cover the cost of the exchange of engines.
oh and just so Its clear the car and engine has only done 85k miles so it's not exactly a high mileage engine.

Matt my old chum the engine in the coupe snapped a belt so there is no 1.8 engine to speak of, I would like to keep the cally but it would have to be broken up to pay for the transplant.
I'm just trying to see if it would be a reasonable enough project and if there is a chance of it being cost effective.

Exactly mate I only paid £1400 for the cally and the coupe would cost me about £1200. So I suppose if I broke the cally I would get about £900 back for it. And I'd have a £3500 car.
