The ever increasing cost of purchasing and running the existing breed of rally cars has led to falling numbers of participants, prompting the FIA to investigate new ways of encouraging new teams and talent.

The result is the introduction of the new FIA Super 1600 category for a complete car cost, ready to run on tarmac events, capped at US$100,000. The FIA Super 1600 Championship will form part of the World Rally Championship (6 European rounds in 2001), attracting the interest of and exposure to the World Series.

In addition, the FIA Super 1600 regulations are being taken up worldwide as a class within national championships, as has happened in the UK.

With an estimated television audience of 2.4 billion viewers in 182 countries, works teams banned, and the car price capped, it is an unrivaled opportunity for young drivers and teams on smaller budgets to shine on the world stage.
