The Astra Coupe fills the gap left in the 1990s with the removal of the popular Calibra. Built by Bertone, the Coupe is perhaps not enough of a radical styling departure from its run-of-the-mill siblings, though given that their design is neat then the Coupe can almost be forgiven this. Available with three powerplants; a 1.8-litre, a 2.2-litre, that also powers the VX220, or a powerful turbocharged 2.0-litre. The Coupe at least offers good performance despite its rather unexciting appearance. Tidy handling with good body control means the Coupe is an entertaining drive. While the driving environment does not feel particularly special, unusually for a coupe there is space for four. The dashboard is well arranged and neat, though shares the same slab-like design of lesser Astras. All offer decent performance and a good standard specification, though the Turbo is a real bargain, providing great pace at a competitive price.
