The elegant Astra Convertible is the latest car in the Vauxhall stable to get turbo power, courtesy of Vauxhall's acclaimed 192 PS 2.0 litre engine used to such good effect in the Astra Coupe and Zafira GSi.

Combining the turbo engine with the Astra Convertible results in a 0-60 mph time of 7.5 seconds, and because of its excellent aerodynamic performance, the same top speed as the Astra Coupe of 151 mph.

These kind of figures take the Astra straight to the top of the performance league for cars in the class.

Price on the road, when it goes on sale later this month, will be 19,995.

The launch of the new Convertible model adds more strength to a range of cars winning friends everywhere, including the award of the What Car? Convertible of the Year title - ahead of the Audi TT (26,300), BMW Ci 318 (24,945) and the Peugeot 206 CC (14,480).

Open top motoring
It's not all about stunning performance, of course. Driving the Astra Convertible is also about elegant, hood down motoring surrounded by an array of safety, comfort and convenience features.

The new Astra Convertible Turbo scores heavily here, with additional specification over the already well equipped 2.2 model.

So, in addition to a standard list which includes ABS, ESP, multi-CD player, and remote control electric hood, the high performance Turbo adds: 17 inch alloys, a windbreak and a host of styling enhancements like the oval exhaust pipe, special turbo floor mats and aluminium finish gear knob.

Roof down made easy
Astra Convertible was the first in its class with a remote control electric soft top as standard. The fully retracting, electric soft top opens and closes at the push of a button, with remote control to make the operation even easier.

Opening or closing the roof takes around 30 seconds.

And the Astra is a genuine all-rounder. It has four full-size seats, lots of interior space and a large boot (330 litres) for a car in this class. Thanks to the soft top's excellent heat insulating properties - featuring three layers including a 10mm thick insulating layer of polyester fleece - the car can be driven through the worst of winter.
