    Witching hour slowdown

It appears some server jobs are scheduled to run at 12.00am gmt. I'm assuming database reindexing or backup. For 10-15 minutes the site is completely unusable - at a relatively busy time of day. Most annoying if you are posting or editing.

Is it possible to reschedule them to run at say 4.00am when the site is at it's quietest?

Damn annoying it is too. If i remember correctly it was MSG who first noticed it, made a post the length of war and peace, but alas nothing came of it. I suffer from this every time i'm on nights. Oddly enough its only with MIG.

I'll try and stay up late one evening and watch the processes on ssh. I've had a big look around the server and can't figure out what is doing this - backup isn't scheduled till 2am.

No slow down yet. Server load is low - nothing strange happening.

Strange. I can't see any unusual processes running in the background either. Maybe it is only specific days. Please report each time you experience this here so I can get a better chance of catching it happening. Thanks.

    Re: Witching hour slowdown

Mark - tbh, that time falls into the backup - not much I can do about that as we need backups to run at somepoint, and that time is probably the best time (not for you though). I could investigate a different backup system though - but they aren't free (well, the good ones aren't).

Are you working alongside my boss

No Mike, that makes sense. I'll take a look tonight to see if the timings change again.

    Re: Witching hour slowdown

I think I've found the issue. The backup was set to run at 2am, but I've checked the file creation times and they were done at 12am!!! I actually had updated the control panel yesterday, so this update must have fixed this issue, as last night's backup started at 2am - as it should. As such, slow down at 2am is likely. Mark - can you comment on whether the site is slow, dead or what during that time please?
