I've got a netgear WGR614v9 at the minutewhich is a G router and TBH signal to my 360 upstairs is ****ing shocking, I'm picking my new 360 up on friday and want to actually be able to use it upstairs.
is it worth upgrading to the N?

Yes it is. Otherwise man up and get a long ass Ethernet cable lol
Signature not as cool as Paul's
I did that once and it seemed to be slower![]()
Might have been too long lmaobut N is better than G if you want wireless. If you want hard wired then it doesn't make a difference

no point hard wiring a wifi built in xbox, off to PCworld tomorrow I think.
Yeah g is rubbish for wireless, everytime I was host on MW2 you could see everyone else darting about because of the rubbish connection lmao.
I saw a video somewhere about connecting a ps3 with wireless and wired, the ps3 shows its downstream speed and on an 8 meg connection it was about 2 meg over wifi and 5 or 6 on wired.
Hopefully will see an improvement since I am now on a 20 meg connection with an N router.
Edit, Gaz I'm not sure of the spec of the new xbox but the router I have they do a N 150mb's version and a 300 version. May aswell get a 300mbs N router![]()

it's odd as my laptops manage fine on G and I thought the router was an N compatible as it's literally a few months old at a cost of £40 from VirginMedia.
one thing I've noticed is on the XBOX I get full bars when the internet isn't plugged into the router (only running the localised wireless network) and when the internet is plugged in it drops at least 2 bars.
wish I had caught that edit before going out this morning, just bought a cisco linksys N router which was about £35 does 2.4ghz N pretty much bottom rung, it worked fine for about an hour now it's doing all sorts of whack **** lmao can barely connect with it, so instead of getting fed up I'm off to Comet to exchange it for a more expensive much higher specced one.
wish me luck lol
Seriously dude, lern2homeplug
Internets through house wiring, neat, tidy, fast, reliable.

The only way to make best use of N is to make sure everything is running it too, ie. laptop, and games console. It won't make a bling bit of difference if your xbox can only run G network..... what are the new 360's capable of? they N or b/g?
they are N which is why I'm getting rid of the weakest link and upgrading the network in the process, the older single antenna wireless adapter were only G so I chucked that in the trade in against the slim too, my laptop is capable of N and I have an N dongle for anything I come accross which might need it.
good stuffJust for future reference, I have always found that Belkin's kit is pretty good, and has always been reliable for me, and my old man

yeah I've always liked the Belkin stuff but Netgear has never gone wrong for me and was the only brand other than linksys on sale there.
Do all the devices in the house have to be N to be able to run N on compatible devices? mums laptop is G, my laptop is N but it still only connects at 54mb's when I check status in network connections :S

still playing with settings so don't really have a definitive answer other than my assumption it will put out what the lowest device can handle, I know there was a multiple output one (wireless) for sale but it wasn't in stock and was waaaay out of my budget.

I bought a Buffalo N router for just over £30 I think...not had any problems with that. I get 270mbps from my PC upstairs to the router. The N card in my PC isnt matched either!
///SOUTH CENTRAL MINCERS
I've got 2 sets of homeplugs, 1 pair of standard ones and 1 pair of wireless n extenders (that i got for free!)
If i have my 360 steering wheel plugged in to the mains the throughput goes down to nothing, otherwise i get a fairly decent speed down in to my bedroom anyway. That's on a different ring main as well.
TSW Hockenheins for Sale

it should top out at 54mbps if you have a G device connected unless it's dual band router AFAIK
I ordered another dongle from Ebay a few days ago too it's supposed to be a netgear WN111, I was extremely pissed off when a WG111v2 showed up.
Cat5e is so stupidly cheap these days it's not really worth trying to put a fast connection through your power lines, I ran a line from my router upstairs yesterday now I've got rid of the crap 360 wireless G adapter, now I can actually stream on the box upstairs.
PS anyone know of a free equivalent to PlayOn? there's no way I'm paying $30 for it, it's good but not THAT good.
that's the one I bought, didn't realise virgin supply them too, how much was it from them?
maybe it doesn't top out at the lowest device, that's cool then.
It comes free with the Broadband XL 20mb package.
The guy who came to install tried palming us off with a Netgear dg834g which we already had so I sent him away to get the right one lmao
