Windows XP Pro and Internet Explorer???

    Hi guys,

Im after a bit of advice please. Ive updated my mother in laws computer to Windows XP from Windows ME and have got to installing her broadband which is BT Broadband. On installing the disc its saying that it needs to update to internet explorer 6 which it cant do automatically as there currently isnt any internet connection.

Ive got IE7 on a disc from doing mine in the past. I tried to install this directly onto her pc but it wont accept that as the service pack of the operating system wont allow it. So i downloaded IE6 onto a pen drive and tried to install that but it wouldnt let me either saying something about a proxy sever??

How can i get around this problem so i can get her internet up and running for her?

    Thanks in advance

You should be able to install the BB manually.

Where can I find user guides for my broadband hardware? | Help | BT.com

It's normally just adding the modem hardware, dialling 0,38, then adding the un and pw.

Is it a wireless router? The black home hub 2? If so you don't need anything from the BT cd if you're going to use it wirelessly. The only reason for using the CD is if you want all of the useless crap that infests your PC or you're going to use USB to connect to the Hub (and even then you don't need to run BT's installer).

IE6 is being phased out across the web as well, although Microsoft will support it for the life of XP. I've got an email somewhere about an IE9 preview.

IE6 is the bain of my life...get away from Internet Explorer and use Firefox (as previously suggested) or Opera, or google Chrome. There are so many better options out there! And as phazer has already said...I wouldn't use the dodgy software you get from BT, it really isn't much use, and if you have XP installed you should be able to connect (wirelessly or otherwise) without needing to use that - just plug it in and away you go!

Doesn't XP come bundled with IE6 anyway?

    Pre SP2 i think is 6, iirc you can't buy a straight SP3?.

If you try and do anything through the secure MS site, as a partner,, etc, you'll find bits of it are now written to NOT let you in unless your on IE!! If you decide to continue in FF, and try to download Beta;s, the MS Active x control craps out, unless your IE.

Very aggressing, and annoying, but then again, when you go to Google with IE, it targets you with downloading Chrome!

Try OWA in Firefox, and notice it forces you to use the "lite" version.
