    USB to Serial install problems

I bought a usb to serial adaptor from ebay some time ago, I need to use it with something and when I try to install it, nothing happens, nothing is displayed in device manager.

The instructions tell me to do this.....

    Driver setup:
double click HidCOMInst contained the INF fils and driver derectory.Nothing will
appear.then plug the usb device,You can setup by the winzard.
Under some circustances,Windows Xp fails to load the HIDCOM driver, and instead loads
the Windows HID driver for the device. In this case, follow the steps below to force
windows to use the HIDCOM driver.
    1.Open up the device manager.
2.Find the Human Interface Device Key related to USB to Serial and right chick on it.
    3.Select Update Driver
4.Select"Install from list from specific location" and click Next
5.De-select"Search removable media",Then select"Include this location in Search".
6.Click Brower.Find the directory containing the Ccport.sys driver and click OK.
7.Select"Don't search,Iwill choose the driver to install".Then click Next.
8.Select"SemiTech USB-HID->COM device" and click Next.
9.Windows will prompt you for the HIDCOM.sys driver.Click Browse and locate HIDCOM.sys
    and ckick Next

If I try to manually install it, after selecting the driver the next page and the next button is blank

    Anyone know?

    Cheers.

I doubt it'll install automatically, try following steps 1-9 to make it update the driver from Device Manager.

Is there anything under 'Unknown Device' or 'Other' with a yellow question mark?

    Nope.

Xp does not even make the device plugged sound when I plug it in.

Re: USB to Serial install problems

    It wont....

it sets up the device as a virtual com port, usually outside of the Comm1-4 range and you need to goto the COM/LPT interface ports section of the device manager, select the high numbered comm port and manually renumber it to inside the 1-4 range (pick 2-4 though as comm1 is usually a pain to take). Might need to reboot but all should be well after that.

There is nothing listed in under COM/LPT.

If I do manually try to add a default port type it comes up as no 20 and is flagged.

If its up with error 20 (could not start I think?), then just do the 'update driver' procedure and it should work.

And when I direct it onto the drivers, it just comes up with a blank page after selecting the .inf file.

    It's probably knackered lmao
