    Slae Hard Rive instalation

Just bougth a 300GB Hard Drive.

When i right click on 'my computer' and go to 'manage' - 'storage' - 'disk management' it says that the hard drive is only 128gb.

so i downloaded FDISK and tryed formating it with that which it says it did, but windows still says that its 128gb.

when i try to format it using windows it doesnt let me format more than 128,000.

can anyone tell me how to install the full 300GB that i bought.

Think it's something to do with XP and service packs. I had a similar prob with a 160 gig reading much less until i installed it with a service pack version of XP

you have a jumper selector on the back of the hdd, which you should have had instructions of which jumper to select.

Or go into computer management >disk management and allocate the rest of the Hdd
    I haven't failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work

Service pack 2 I believe, but I cannot guarantee it will solve the prob. Also suggest if doing windows updates to install any service packs or updates to select the download but notify option. Then on the install bit click custom, and if in the update the Windows Genuine Advantage/notification install is there, tick the box to NOT install it , otherwise if you aren't genuine, you will get stoopid anoying pop ups telling you so grrrrrrr.

Also remember that most of the updates can't be uninstalled

yep it will be a jumper on the back that limits the cluster size on the disks

i had it recently with 750gb drives so you could down size them (god knows who woudl want too?)

also you should have sp2 anyways an all the updates if not why not?
I used to be indecisive but now I am not quite sure

I recently installed a 200gb seagate barracuda drive. Seagate supplied a programme (via their website) to help install and format the drive. It said that my PC didn't have large HDD compatability turned on and do i want to enable it (i'm paraphrasing since i don't remember exactly what was said). I clicked yes, it restarted and the drive installed and formatted perfectly. You can download the programme at the Seagate site, so it may be worth a try?

IIRC some older motherboards can have trouble dealing with large capacity HDD, but i think this problem has been phased out by now.

Yep. I get frustrated by this every time I format my pc, because the largest partition I can initially install onto is 128Gb. As soon as I install Service Pack 2, I can see the rest of the drive . But yeah, this is your problem. It can be downloaded on the microsoft update site, or you can request a disk be sent to you free of charge from microsoft which has SP2 on.

When i downloaded SP2 there and tried to install it, it said that it was unable to because the product key used to install my copy of windows was not valid.

Im really pulling my hair out over this, how can i get round it?
