Rear Arch Replacement Q's - pics

On my Cavailer Saloon Sh1 tb0x the arches were left to go like this from the previous owners

I've now had the welding done for the underside to pass the MOT.

Now it's time to sort the arches. Have been on http://www.bodyshopwarehouse.co.uk/ and found rear arch panels for as little as £6 each. My main question is how big are these panels - on the pics it shows on both sides that the complete arch will need replacing (circled in red) I'm lead to believe that the lower part (circled in blue) is a seperate panel?

If it is i'd like to know what its called so i can order a replacement panel, or will it need to be fabricated? Need to know so i can order the panels so i'm ready to get it done. If anyone could help me out from previous experience on the part that arch replacement panels cover etc that would be great.

not trying to sound cheeky mate, but what is the rest of the car like? That is a lot of corrosion.Unless you can do it yourself that will cost mega bucks. You also need the inner arches im sure from looking at that picture.whats the floor like?and sills?I ve seen arches that bad as the owner has cut the lip off to fit big wheels and it has corroded but the rest of the car is sound.Just hope it is.
    Good luck

I've just had the floor sorted out on the drivers side, and the passenger side has already been done (including new sill)

The rest of the car is practically mint and is worth spending the money in my opinion, thanks though. Considering the price i bought the car for it will still be cheaper than buying a mint gsi cav. Just need to get on with it and order the arch panels i guess now (PS it wont be me doing the work as i have no welding experience)

£600 ! ouch! still worth it for this car, luckily i have another car i will be able to drive while this gets sorted out.

And yeah if people looked after and gave up some time to the car then things like this wouldnt happen. Although it would of been over a long period this sort of thing, these arches have already been done, albeit with filler!

Well if the guy that had the car before me had looked after it then I wouldnt have to do stuff to it now, tbh now I;ve had the car a while I think the guy before me had the arches done but then when he found out the IRS was gonna need plating n welding up then he flogged it to me, if only I knew then what I know now...

    Ho hum live n learn...

If you think the cars worth it get it done....

An easy way to see if it has been repaired before is to get a magnet and scan it over the bodywork. As filler obviously isnt magnetic.Gaz the only problem you will have with getting it done anywhere else rather than doing it yourself is nowhere i have ever seen properly rust treats and primers the old rust metal that is left.It is always welded over, usually not even undersealed which means the new ones will rot from the inside out.If you are getting it done and your handy with a grinder/jigsaw you could buy the repair panels, draw round them and cut away a lot of the old metal to give you a chance to spend a couple of days, putting on Jenolite then sanding it down/do that a couple of times then primer it.
You will need to watch as well as a lot of unscrupulous garages will plate over the old metal and leave the rusty stuff behind it so the car is rotting from the inside out.I will dig you out a picture to show you.gimme a min

Its a good rust beater and kills any rust before you grind/paint over it.You can get it in Halfords.Once you have dressed any rust with wire brush/grinder etc you brush it on and leave it on for a set time, best leaving it longer, then doing it a couple of times. Then grind/wash the residue off then paint it will help you keep your car longer.

And to think nearly all wheel-arch corrosion can be avoided by brushing the crap out of them once a month (or more often, if you're eager). Wheel-arches nearly all rot from behind, as a result of moisture trapped in the crud splashed up from the roadway.

Believe me, I'm a wheel-arch-rot expert. What's my credentials? I've owned three MG Maestro EFi's and one Maestro Turbo and an MG Metro. 'Nuff said.

heres a picture of one of the replacement arches I bought for my cavalier. By the look of your pictures Gaz, this replacement panel is just the ticket.

    They cost around £10. new.

Micky thats spot on, having had a closer look today that is fine and covers all of the parts that need doing, and goes far enough at each end so i dont have problems with having to plate an extra area cos i cant weld to rust. If thats the same shape as the part that i can get from bodyshop warehouse then i'm laughing!
