FAO People who re-spray panels etc.

Just resprayed part of my rear panel.
Spraying using a normal aerosol can, primed the area, now waiting for it to harden.
My question is this, where i`ve sprayed the primer on, i`ve gone onto unprepared area, so the feel of the primer is rough on these parts, should i t-cut this area to remove overspray ?

OR, spray over with finishing color (diamond black)then t-cut ?

    Cheers......

When the primer is hard, you should flat it using some fine grade wet and dry to remove imperfections. Remove all the primer from unprepped area before topcoating because it won't stick to unprepped paint.

    Cheers.
Sprayed area, just gotta tickle down and spray on lacquer.

Only a couple of runs too, hopefully they`ll dry themselves out.

Whats the best way to apply the laquer, only apply to prepared area or blend in with rest of panel ?

    Cheers.....

Prep painted area with something like 500grit, and then prep the surrounding old paintwork with some scotchbrite or similar. Paint laquer inside this area. When it is dry, polish out scotch scratches.
Alternatively, go over the whole panel with 500 and laquer the whole panel.

    Cheers mike.

The panel i`m spraying is the drivers rear panel.
The area on this panel is just below the petrol cap, yes you guessed it rusty arch syndrome !

Now, I`ve rubbed down the area and now have sprayed it with the color, BUT, it stands out a MILE.
I`m hoping it is the overspray on the rest of the panel that makes the new painted area "stand out".

Once i`ve removed overspray with t-cut, i will do what you advised, tickle down new painted area, BUT, am a bit wary of lacquering the whole panel, if i lacquer just the newly sprayed area, will this blend in ??

    (Fingers crossed).

    Cheers again.............

It depends. It is quite difficult to to a decent fade with an aerosol, but hopefully polishing the area around the repair should remove any overspray. I've never tried with an aerosol. It is also possible that the colour isn't a very good match (not unusual from an aerosol unless it was a custom match).

as Mike said its gonna be VERY difficult to blend the repair in to the rest of the panel unless ur using some kind of fade-out to blend the lacquer in. All T Cut will do is keep pulling the lacquer back and u will always be left with that 'line' around the repair. Best thing probably to do is feather your paint out very well (it wont make the colour match perfect but it will lessen the 'just painted patch' effect) then lacquer all of the panel or blend the laquer in on as small an area as possible (maybe at the top of the qtr where it starts to run along the roof)

Sorry for the essay but hope it helps a little

Right then, Finally finished, BUT, even tho i`ve lacquered it, it is not as shiny as the other panels.
Is there any buff up compound stuff to give it a boost ??

I Know if you spray the lacquer quite close this gives a better finish/shine, but evertime i attempted this i had the lacquer running for britain !!!

In the end i found the best way was to do short bursts onto the panel, this worked a treat, but has left a more "matt" finish.

Any ideas what i could do to bring the shine out, bearing in mind this has all been out of spray cans.

    Cheers......................

If u use wet 1500 grade wet an dry very lightly on the lacquer you should see very slight 'pimples' , if you rub the lacquer VERY lightly till these go then polish it with G3 compound till all the scratch marks are gone (DONT go harsh with the G3 cause it can remove lacquer) then finally go over that with a hand glaze it should come up like a mirror.
make sure there is enough lacquer on the panel tho (3 - 4 coats) and be very gentle at every stage

Might do a write up on small panel repairs (sort of a how to) if people are interested ??

There isnt alot of coats, about 3, BUT, some areas have only 1 or 2 as i had to rub away the runs. !
Instead of tickling the panel down, can i just rub G3 straight in then use the hand glaze.?

where can i get g3 and hand glaze ?

    Cheers again.

You don't have to go over it with 1500 (although it would help). You can get G3 from any motor factors (Brown Brothers for example - check the yellow pages). Alternatively, you could just try T-cut and give it a good polish afterwards.
Either way, just don't rub too hard
