    Rear Arches :-(

My rear arches have started to bubble a bit on the paint work, they are not rotten, just bubbling.

would it be worth just rubbing down the bubbled area and treat/respray or are new arches a must ??

How do you fit rear arches, are they cut out and new ones welded on some how or wot ?

    Cheers...........

Catch 'em as quick as you can. The bubbling you see is the tip of the iceberg, unfortunately. It's coming from the inside (where moisture is trapped). Therefore, filling, spraying etc will only ever be temporary. It'll just bleed back through.

Sorry, but there is only one 'proper' fix. Just as you mentioned - it all needs chopping out, with the new repair panel welding in. Then, comprehensively waxed inside by removing the interior trim etc.

I said 'catch 'em quick' because the worse it gets, the harder the job - really rotten arches will be holed on the inside panel also, which means more chopping and welding.

    'Tis painfull surgery indeed

I'd choose a good bodyshop that restores classics. Most 'spray shops' only deal with new mota's that have dented wings etc. Some will not even touch a car with rust

If you just want to slow it - get in there with the waxoil. It'll wait 'till next summer then, if funds are tight.

i want to wait as $$$ are tight but i washed the car the other day and one of the bubbles flaked off !!! only small amount so i touched it up with some paint i have from the bumper i put on.

some of the bubbles, about 6 in total are quite large, about 50p size and 5 and 10 p seizes

Now you mentioned it, the inside of the arches are a bit tired, i have pulled part of the lip off the inside away as it was weak and MOT Is due in 4 weeks....

what with a kid, christmas and car repairs all on the way, expensive few months ahead

    Cheers matey.......

As far as MoT's go - just cover the arch lip with Gaffa tape. It'll pass no worries on that. Otherwise, they can fail you on sharp edges.

Oh dear, that dreaded question "Vauxhall Arches"

Cut 'em out mate, I tried the old "rub down, treat and spray" but it's no good.

Vauxhall Decided that spot welding two plates of sheet metal together would be a good idea, WRONG...........

As was said, Moisture get's trapped etc etc and it eats from inside out, If you want to see for yourself go inside the car, get the panels off in the boot, then look down where the arch joins.

I got a Nova, and i decided it would be a good idea to do the work myself WRONG, i totally messed it up and i gotta pay someone to do it now

Oh btw, about the front arches, they didd'nt spot weld the inner Arch to the outer arch because you would'nt be able to remove it......

the rear 3/4 panel is spot welded to the inner arch because they cannot be unbolted and removed. The front look's pretty much like this (another one of my bodge jobbies)

That Aluminium sheet is in the place of the old Iron one that Vauxh had in originally

what u mean "shame about the Diesel Thing"

she's a beast mate, she'll eat most things off the lights and stick with them enough to scare the cráp out of them.

And that's Standard, still got to fit a bleed valve

Oh dear, Black smoke you say?

mine is clean as a whistle, even when powering down

I got no back seats in a car that weighs as much as an empty crisp packet.

    She tend's to lag before 2000rpm, but from 2000 - 5100pm it's sweet acceleration (for a diesel)

0-60 is rattled down to just under 9 sec's and a top end of 120mph on 16"x 7" TSW stealth alloys

    cool, nice car mate.
The job you did aint that bad, pretty good if your not in the trade that is !!

Looks better than the hole, once sprayed it wont look too bad.

Like i said earlier, mine just has bubbles on the paint work, i`ve had a look at he arch on the inside of boot and there aint much rust, just dirt, it seems pretty solid on the inside.
