    2k paint problems....

    Where am i going wrong,

last night prepped primed the panel and flatted the primer, sprayed a coat of 2k onto the primer and it went on a dream, no runs etc. Left it to go off over night, flatted it back with some 800 W+D and just neat tap water. Wiped it all down with a known clean rag and left the water to dry off, then tack clothed it all over and left it while i shook the rattle can up.

Sprayed the next layer of 2k on and all hell broke loose runs galore and some crazy ass reaction going on, everything was clean as possible the panel was slightly warm as i'd got two halogen heaters pointing at it.

This has really pissed me off as I thought I'd done everything right.

Rear wing on the MK3 Paul.

I went upto the paint shop today and basically the guys there said I need to leave it for at least 3 days for it to fully harden as I dont have access to an industrial oven. Which makes sense now that I think about it, inspite of being the same type of paint and top layer appearing and feeling hard enough beneath it it was soft as ****. Hence the runs and the reaction.

    3 days? No way.
The paint shop next to me doesn't sit round for 3 days waiting for stuff to dry.

Yeah this what I was told to do mate, to ensure it is completley cured before attempting to rub it down and then refinishing it.

And tbh it's the wrong time of year to be spraying paint but needs must.

Your putting 2k lacquar over rattle can paint? Thats a prob to start with. The thinners in the lacquar will start to reactivate the rattle can paint.

You need to use a pannel wiper to clean the pannel too.

Well i primed it over etch primer, then sprayed on the first layer of 2k which went on perfect with a few minor blemishes, but nothing that couldnt be sorted with some W+D.

This is 2k in a can Benn which is what i've used before on the car with no issues.

    What are panel wipes benn?

Doesnt sound like it, sounds like normal rattle can but ok.(from the probs your having)

If you can spray the lacquar then dont mess about with rattle cans get some base and paint that from the gun.

Pannel wiper is a degreaser and cleaner, its a must before painting.

Not sure off hand, most places that sell paint and bits will sell it in small bottles. A must before you paint as greasey fingers get everywhere..

paint shops dry them in oven at 80C, cured in a couple of hours. for those without oven 3 days minimum, more if temperature is lower than 10C. try heat lamps if its a fiberglass wing.
or if its off the car sneak it inside.

also 2k should be applied in cross coats, light mist spray one direction then heavier coat 90 degrees to the first. mist coat tacks very quick and hold second coat. no sanding required glossy of the gun.
