    17 inch tyres?

    hey,

since fitting 17inch alloys to my cav, its become really sluggish. its got 205/40/17 tyres on it. another member suggested that i try fitting 195/40/17 tyres to my alloys.

    1) can this be done?
    2) will it make a difference?
    3) where do i get them 195's from, and how much?

    cheers

It's a known fact that bigger wheels make a car slower to accelerate, but can give some top end. Hence now your car feels sluggish.

it realy shouldnt be that bad on a 2.0 cav.
have u tried a set of 15s back on it to see how it feels?

had 17's on my last cav and cant really say it made any noticable drop in performance... 205/40 were actually slightly smaller overall than the standard tyres

The following words in your search query were ignored because they are too common words: 9000 problem

ive put a set of 175/65/14 astra steels on it for the time being, and woosh, all the power has come back again, it tanks around again, the hand brake once again will lock the back wheels up, and it wheel spins freely.

with response to an answer on my other thread:

could it be the alloys fowling up the brakes?
as iirc, last time i had the 17's on it, and i tried pushing it on my drive, im sure there was some sort of grinding noise from the brakes, which at the time, i thought was coz the car had been stood up for over a year, so i was used to it grinding, although, the whole time ive left it stood up, ive always left it out of gear and with the hand brake off, so they dont bind on.

since fitting the 14's back on, guess what? grinding noise has disappeared, and all the power's come back.

but, with the 17's on, the handbrake was poo, it wouldn't lock the rear wheels, well only when it felt like it anyway, put the 14's back on, and oh look, the back wheels lock up now, even when on the move (when handbrake applied obv). lol.

so is it the alloys causing the brakes to rub? what would stop this happening? do i need wheel spacers etc?

    cheers

glad i could help , can you see where its rubbing too? if its on a brake line or something? a spacer may well be the answer.

fit 190/38/17s they're the best option, it's obviously rubbing on the inner trunking.

partly, everyone can see that the width is in feet, the aspect in thumbs and the radius in ducks.
