    Post Important:- Please Read.

I was having an interesting chat with the guys at SCA Race and Rally Centre in Norwich today and they were saying that if your keeping the same size rim as standard then you want the same offset. But when you go wider you need to move the offset out accordingly so it doesn't rub on the inside arch. Which does make a lot of sense. They were saying that the myth of HAVING to stick to et49 is nonsense and sometimes causes more problems.

I was enquiring about 15s for the Nova and he was saying if I was going for 6.5" I'd need about et42 to keep the right scrub angles??

I then started thinking, I've heard a lot of people who have fitted the allessios to Novas having to "adjust" their inner arch (eg lee may at Combe ). Could this be because they're are et49??

I've also noticed that with standrad vaux alloys the larger they go the further away the offset moves from et49.

So maybe there is alot of truth in what these chaps were saying then?

Its more to do with the width than the height. With 7" wide rims you cant have an ET49 anyway as it hits on the shock. If you stick to the original width you would need the same ET.

People (including me) have said in the past that the wider you go the more you encounter Torque steer and tramlining. I originally said this because when my Nova had its GTE engine in, I had ET40 offset rims (15"), they would create some torque steer in 1st gear.

    I sold them rims.

Now I bought some more rims (15"), the same offset (I didn't know about the offset until I bought them). But all the bushes, rubbers and whatever have been replaced. Also the camber has been set correctly and the tracking done after.

Now with an extra 50foot pounds of torque and some ET40 offset rims I get NO more torque steer than I did with the 14" Astra Steelies (ET49).

My current alloys are ET40 6.5 wide 15" rims.

I have notice a very slight increase in Tramlining, but this is so small you barely notice it most of the time.

oh and also, the wider track that the ET 40 offset rims give extra cornering ability.

    Sweet!

The main reason I ask is coz I was planning on getting some 16" Softstars purely because they're 6" wide and I shouldn't have all the hassle of scrubbage and being 16s I can fit HUGE brakes under em! And they look nice too.

But they are et49 and I'll be running 195/45r16 tyres. Will these rub on the inside?

If anyone has 16 Softstars on a Nova their input would be much appreciated.

I have 195/45/16 on my speedlines and they dont catch on the inside. They just rubbed on the outer arch (That hadnt been rolled).

Lee, I swear I saw you at Combe with your hammer out and a rear wheel off hammering away at your inner arch?

Whilst I do not want to be seen to be arguing with the pros, the offset is in relation to where the hub is in relation to the centre line of the wheel. It is not like if you go from a 5.5 inch rim to a 7 inch rim that you will have an extra 2 1/2 inches at one side or the other. I guess that if you wanted to go really wide then it could cause a problem, but people onhere run Astras on J7 ET49 with a drop of upto 35mm with no problems at all.

I was modding my driverside outer arch as it was still as god created it
    Ie not rolled.
Ps I never had the wheel off. There was a nova almost the same colour as mine with a cage. Mine doesnt have a cage.
