Just to jump on this band wagon, anyone heard of a 'Cat' plate.
ie a plate that protects the catalytic convertor under the car from the afore mentioned problem?
lowered or rally minis have them fitted sometimes, protects the sump.

i guess you could adapt one
thanks
Yup, there used on rally cars in gravel/rocky stages.
Dont really see point in using em on a road car Chris...just a waste of money really unless your going off-road...which being lowered to the point where it needs pretecting is impratical in my opinion anyway.

Speed bumps, kerbs, car-parks adam
Avoid kerbs.
Dont hit speed bumps at 70mph
And never use multistorey car parks cos there are too many wierdos walking about them waiting to nick stuff.
The spliitter would rip off before the sump anyway.

sump guards r wot there called
One problem with fitting them to minis might apply to other cars too. They dramatically reduce air-flow into the engine bay which can cause over-heating problems.
I used to have one on a mini and the oil temperature went through the roof on a hard drive.
Personally I wouldnt bother.
A cat protector plate as far as I can see is just another piece of metal hanging down to hit stuff with.
Ok, it may well protect the cat from knocks, but it is going to get heavily damaged pretty quickly. My car is lowered 35mm and the exhaust sometimes scrapes on speed-bumps. A bit of metal hanging below the exhaust would have been squashed into the pipe/ripped off long ago.
