    My bonnet.

My current bonnet has some rust in it (can't see unless bonnet is open) I will be
replacing it with a new one soon.

Trouble is not sure if I should actually do the GSi one as previously thought.
Most seem to believe that it wouldn't look right on a convertible.

I for one can't decide. Any ideas anyone?

    Cracking holiday Lee, thanks!

Mmmmmmm, not bothered about louvres. Reminds me of the covers that were on School radiators in the early 90's.

Mmmmm, everyone seems decided on the GSi bonnet then. Maybe if anyone's good they could graft some on in photoshop.

A GSi bonnet would suit it really well, have you got the sideskirts on yet, as they will look ace.

Did the 200TS have bonnet vents? if so then definatley do it.

200ts does have vents yes, so does the 200ie and 180is (I think).

My skirts (with a bit of luck) shall be on by the end of the week, or at least
    for the Bristol motor show.

Think is the Spec edition Astra GSi didn't have them. So there's another reason.

Here is a pic of my mate Pete's car and this is the spec edition GSi

Would look very nice imo. Working on a mock-up as we speak.

Do you have a rear picture of your mates Spec Edition GSi (with longer spoiler) ?

It's not taken at the best angle. His car is a minter. Really nice. Pete used to
use the BB a lot. User name was Canny.

Anyway, head on pic is HERE

I assume you'll be using a proper GSi bonnet, and not just a new one with stick on RGM's? how about a small bulge welded in, like the rover 220 turbos, make it look like a V6 beast

Well, it will be a V6 beast soon! (Money permitting) The bulge is a nice idea. I
have thought about that one, but want to keep it kinda factory. But still, it's
something to consider. Could put a nice big induction cone in where the bulge
    is!

Oh yeah, it will be a genuine bonnet. That stick on stuff is just trash! Not
    worth even considering.

...Just twigged who you are as well! hehe!

Functional bonnet vents would be a useful addition anyway if you'll be running a V6, so get em sorted.

Si, worth pointing out that you gotta be careful when you're changing bonnets!

There are two different types of hinges with two different types of bonnet and they're NOT interchangeable!!

ie older mk3's had an old style hinge and with this went the old style bonnet (inc GSi).

Newer cars (possibly the phase two's: the change over point is not clear) had different hinges and hence different bonnets to suit!

I'm in the middle of finding out at the mo. But if (most likely) the older hinges have been superceeded by the new hinges the chances are a new bonnet may not fit your (old style?) hinges.

In my case, it is unlikely that i'll be able to get hold of the old style hinges and it isn't possible to get them from a scrappy: they need angle grinding off!!

In your case, you may be able to buy new bonnets, in the old style (to suit your hinges).

This would be a prime reason why they phase II GSi's didn't have GSi bonnets!!!

Hope you can understand this: bit of a mouthful!

Mine is pre v-grill mate, so it shouldn't be a problem. Althougth I didn't know the phase 2's had the different hinges. Cheers for the info though.

I've seen the hinges on mine and also the GSi and they are the same.

I'd better tell Pete as I think he was gonna fit a GSi bonnet and his is an R reg so will have diff hinges

To look at, there's hardly any difference: just that the holes do not align!

But it is BAD-ASS metal and will be a job to drill/weld!!

Like I said, Richard and I are trying to sort it properly before we consider modifying whats there.

So is the base where the hinge sits look the same or is that what you're trying to asses right now?

You trying to get the hinges from an older spec model or is that too difficult to do?

Sounds like one of those really annoying jobs!

While you're at it, you ought to get Richard to put some bonnet struts in like the one's on Rob's car. You seen how he did it? Very neat. Think the lifters are from an Omega or something.

The hinge will fit flush against the bonnet but the holes don't line up.

The hinges have special rivets and are welded in, tucked up towards the bulkhead. The chances of using an angle grinder in a scrappy are null, so the chances of raping some of a car are didly squat.

Enquiring to whether they definately have been superceeded or not, though one would think so as when would anyone need new hinges?...-when they have a front ender: in which case they need a new bopnnet aswell: hence new hinges and new bonnet!

I already looked into bonnet struts as I was after black ones to go on my car. Looked into using boot ones, but they're too powerful. The ones on Rob's car are from an Omega bonnet, but the ball joints have been modified.
