Vectra rear handles on Mk3 astra

I've got the vectra rear handles to replace my driver and passenger front ones - so they are both delocked

Doing the passenger side was easy - I tried to leave the barrel in the metal plate, but the handle would not fit flush... I remember seeing a post a while back that it was possible to fit the vectra handles but leave the original barrel behind it?

On the passenger side it wasn't a problem, just disconnected the rods etc. but on the drivers side I really want to leave the lock underneath hidden...

Is this possible? Any hints of how to push the barrel back or something so that the handle will fit flush to the bodywork?

    Cheers

You need to use the metal plate from the vectra handles rather than the plate from the astra ones

So the metal backing part form the vectra will mean the lock housing is pushed back more than on the standard astra backing plates?

Thumbs up i'll be doing the same...

    very soon...

so in order to delock the car with different door handles, you just need the handles themselves and the backing plate.... is that it?

would you advise to keep the locks like SJMorgran or just to ditch them?

    Yep...

Though if I were you I would ditch the lock on the passenger side - no need for that, and then you can keep the existing backing plate for the passenger side.

I personally want to keep the lock on the drivers door if something really bad went wrong with my alarm and couldn't (for some reason) open the boot and climb through that way.

If you ditch the lock mecahnisms on both sides you don't need the backing plates, just the handles.

    Thumbs up nice one Stu!

cheers mate... i have got remote central locking but it doesnt activate the boot so thats ok! if the batterys do go in the remote or the alarm packs up, the last resort would be climbing through the boot - better than putting a window thru tho!

Might just ditch both locking mechanisms so i will only need the handles them selves... might for rear Astra or Cav handles myself because ive noticed that everyone has veccy ones, altho they look better - i like to be different (hence the tail lights )

Anyway Stu, sorry about that mis-understanding mate! none of it meant to happen... apoligies galore!

    No probs

I would do that then - I'm going to find out from vauxhall how much the metal plate is - if it's too much I think I will just remove the drivers door lock as with the passenger one.

get back to the scrappers - its very rare that there will be handles with no backing plate

    Hi Guys,

You NEED to use the backing plates from the Rear of a vectra on the front too. You can not leave them in with no backing plate otherwise someone could just Pop the handle out with a screw driver and open the door in a matter of seconds !!!

I done the Above conversion today on AndyMk3`s Astra and I Used the standard astra Plates on the rear and Vectra Rear plates on the front and it all works fine.

    Hope this helps

    Richard

Yeah, I've left the original backing plate in, which fits fine on the passenger side because I removed the lock barrel - don't want to do this really on the drivers side as I want to keep the lock barrel there

Do you need Veccy backing plate for passengers side even though ridding of the locking barrel completely? I know I need backing plate for drivers side but didnt think I needed one for passenger side

    Exclamation

Sorry to add further confusion to all of this!!

I (with help) fitted de-locked veccy handles onto my front astra doors whilst at Billing.....several members can back me up here!!
I used my astra front door backing plate and kept the locking barrel, the veccy one's went on with no problem!! They sit flush and the central locking works as well as it ever has done!!

    FFS lmao

    Thanks alot Neil...add more confusion!

Ive been told so many bloody different things about these Veccy handles, Im beginning to wander if I shall bother

Also, on EPC, there are black ungrained listed ones, but no ungrained primered listed. Theres just primered however, any gen if these are also ungrained?

im personally not going for Veccy handles now, as ive seen what they look like on white astras - not all that nice...

Thanks to Claire (aka Betty) and Ben, ive decided to go for rear Cav/Astra ones sanded down, wet n dry'd then painted...

as the finished seems to be alot better and they dont "bulge out"...

nice! this is what i have now!

AdamSri.........order the veccy backing plates from vauxhall at £4 each you can't go wrong!!
See if you can get away with your astra backing plates, if not then you're only £8 down, if you can get away with it vauxhall will give a refund!!
I went for un-primered grained ones, they look great, have seen smooth ones......no offence Lee69 but I think I made the right choice, the smooth ones look too shiney and smooth for me!!

Fair enough regarding grained handles, but if I wanted to have grained ones, Id get Mk3 Astra Phase 2 handles.

    I deffo want ungrained primered.
I cant seem to find them on EPC however, only ungrained in black.

I'm sure when I went to Vauxhall they could only offer the grained or un-grained one's in un-primered black!!

Are phase 2 astra handles the same as veccy ones then??

just to throw a little more confusion in .... phase 2 astra handles are the same as vectra 1's (they have the bulge where the lock should be) so if ur planning to smooth them into the door - good luck !! i tried this an it looks p00 so i went for cav rear handles, look pretty much the same an easier to fill and smooth

What do you mean by Phase 2 Astra?

MK3 Facelift? 94-98, as my 95 ones are like the Cav 1's

the same year the astra's got the black panel on the boot is the year they got 'vectra' handles (these handles seem to be universal right throughout the vauxhall range now) Personally they dont look that much different to any other GM handles but each to their own
