    Advice on Mk2 rear arches!

I'm going to attempt a minor repair on the rear arches intime for the Retro car show next weekend. The corrosion is only light besides one area at the bottom of the rear passanger arch.

The rust has just started to come through a few stone chips on the arch lip. I've polished away alot of the discolouration etc but want to stop it as best I can until the body shop sort it out properly.

My plan is to lightly rub the surface rust away with some fine wet and dry, then paint on 3M Rust 'Beater'. I'll then let it go off , sand down and paint with a rattle can so it doesnt look too gash! I'm then going to spray the inner arch etc with WD40 to keep any moisture away.

    Does that sound about right?

Will take pics, should start it at the weekend!

You might be surprised with how much rust is under the paintwork mate, i had to cut mine away and fabricate some rounded rear arches up.

I know exactly what your saying mate! The inner arches are 100% sounds so I'm hoping its only as bad as what I can see.

The car's been garaged from new and this is the only rust so in 'theory' it should be minimal.

My main goal is a two parter. To slow the onset of rust until the bodyshop get in and to make it look tidy as the car is spoiled.

Dont spray any wd40 on it, the oil will pick up dirt which inturn attracts moisture.... You need to keep it clean and dry.

I see what your saying mate! My theory is to keep it as dry as possible, so it doesnt stand wet in the garage without any air etc.

I could always give it a quick WD40 then wipe it clean!

    GTE 16v
    Hi orange peel
Waxoyl is good sh*t mate,it kills rust and prevents/repels moisture,I used it inside the rear arches of my GTE.
It's an easy enough job to get the plastic panels off each side of the boot and the side interior rear quarter panels too then you can really see the job in hand! (If your brave enough to look lol) Or alternatively if you have arms like mr tickle you could always try doing the job through the little flap with the hazard triangle on it lol,
Ive really gone to town on mine and used it inside the doors/tailgate/sills and all the floor pan inside /up the front of the bulkhead (carpet out job) and inside the scuttle panel etc etc.
If you stand the tin in a bucket of boiling water first it makes it nice and runny/waterlike and will coat even those hard to reach areas inside the rear arch easily if you use it inside the doors etc just make sure you don't block up any drain holes etc.
Im hoping to get some time to fettle with mine before retro, hope to see you there matey
