Alloys and the centre wheel hole.........???

My mate has an mx5 and a renault clio.

he took the aftermarket alloys off the clio and fitted them to the mx5, they fit, so he went to fit the mx5 standard wheels to the clio and found out the centre hub nut was too small, the alloys off the clio had a bigger centre hole hence they fitted onto the mx5, so he drove the mx5 with the alloys on and at about 25 mph he has alot of shuddering/vibration and general not good behaviour, now i think i know the answer, but anyway, is it because the centre hub hole of the alloy is BIGGER than the actual hib nut of the mx5 ?????

    cheers.......

Maybe the offset is massively wrong. The wheel should centre up well enough on the bolts, provided they were done up evenly in sequence.

Have some spiggots made up from the difference in the centre bore of the hub and the wheel! Even a fraction of a mm will show up as vibration!

the bolts should align the wheel fine. but on that note, do MX5's not have studs? and they might not have taper nuts on em to center the wheel, causing it to be off center, and vibrate ?

cheers guys, yep, mx5`s have studs, all 4 align up fine, but the centre hole of the alloy is bigger than the actual hub nut, he says they bolted on fine, but as some have said, the 1/4" gap of the centre hub hole is prob making it vibrate ?????

You need to check if the wheel nuts are tapered. If they are they should hold the wheel in centred place just right and it doesn't matter about the hub gap.

Basically a ring which makes up the difference in diameters so it centres them better!

the usual procedure of winding each wheel nut right up with dodgy centring will prolly result in slightly off center wheels

if u slowly tighten each nut bit by bit as they come up against the alloy you'll have more of a chance of getting them perfectly centered

i had this problem on my nova after spigots cracked, refitted wheels and there was lots of shuddering, slackened the bolts and retightened them all bit by bit and it vanished
