How many Flame Reds are there?

I've got a 'H' 1991 GTE 16v mk2 Astra in Flame red and I just bought a few panels from a guy with a 1990 GTE but now his red looks different to mine. Where the GTE's painted different reds or is this normal variation?

My paintwork looks more vibrant and his is a darker red. But its consistent with all my panels looking the vibrant and all his the darker.

It will be due to fading/oxidising,nothing a damn good polish wont sort.

heres my old cav before a proper buffing/polish

When I worked for ICI one of the reps happened to have his colour panels with him one day. I had a look and he had something silly like 40-odd variations of Flame Red - all due to variations from the factory and fading.

at the moment i think there are 7 'official' variants of flame red, and yes they are all noticably different !! we use the ici automotive colour index to mix our colours from and they list 7, but a paint supplier only usually lists 2 (origional and plus white)

not sure how Lee's was done but i would give the whole car a machine polish using G3, then use a hand glaze, then a decent wax.

I'd use a machine with G3 then G10 and finally hand wax.

How much do you reckon that "treatment" would cost?

The pics above look different due to sunlight, flame red always looks more orangey in the sun, and more darker red in overcast weather.
Still looks nice after the polish up though

I'd have thought a bodyshop would runa mop over the car for £50 ish. Might be a little more to get them to do G3 and G10.
