    2 Pack "going off" times?

had my first experiences of spraying 2 pack laquer last night when spraying the rear 1/4 of the vectra. i was really pleased with how it went on, and the fact that it leaves a glossy finish straight away... however... it still dosent seem to have gone off properly, it isnt tacky as such, but if you put your finger on it and press, it leaves a finger print (obviously i did this on a bit that definately wont be seen)

When i was spraying it i had heat lights on it and left them on for about 3-4 hrs after to let it dry, then left it in the garage over night. went home at lunchtime today (about 11 hours after i turned the heat off) and it had still not completely gone off.

I mixed the laquer with hardener at a ratio of 2:1 as per instructions...

    any ideas?

it isnt heated over night, but whilst spraying it was pretty warm, i certainly worked up a sweat anyway lol and as i said, i left it with heat on for about 3 hours after spraying...

    Was it winter hardener?

Try a hairdryer on a concealed area and see if it sets it.

nope Dulux is only in solid colours. I know a guy painted a Volvo 740 in Dulux house paint, thinned with PETROL because thats all he had handy and it looked really nice and glossy.

Can't tell you how durable it is as the car was banger raced the following weekend LOL.

My mechanic drove round in an old MK2 escort van with a RS2000 engine in it.

That was hand painted with Dulux white - lasted for years lmao

Just a note for anyone thinking of doing this - for any 2-pack to be durable the mixing ratio must be adhered to quite strictly as smallish differences can make a big difference to performance. Without knowing what hardener you are using and the resin make-up of Dulux there is no way you can just guess the correct ratio.

In answer to the original question - in my experience, only ultra high-solids 2-pack paints don't dry within a short-ish space of time if the correct hardener and thinner and ratios are used. These need to be baked usually to cure properly. I doubt you used ultra high-solid paint though because it costs loads more.

At a guess you have used the incorrect thinners/hardener for the temp you were using it in. Hopefully leaving it in the sun will have sorted it.

Someone who lived near me painted his old Volvo bright yellow using a sweeping brush. He also changed the oil in the street and left the old oil draining on the pavement!

    They very evicted soon afterwards!
