I thought it was a screw in thing, that had some glue underneath the gear knob?

The standard knob is glued on,aftermarket ones generally use a grub screw to secure them.

You can take the whole gear stick off and saok the knob in hot water to loosen the glue, look under the gaitor for the securing pin,at the bottom of the stick.

hacksaw! well thats wot i used anyway! on the phase 1 astra, the knob just pulls off, and then you're left with a green/yellow stub - cut this off. the phase 2 knobs don't pull off, you need to cut it down bit by bit until you get to the metal (not going throught, mind!) if you do this, make sure you cover up the plastic around the base of the gear stick, as the rubber and plastic "dust" is a bitch to remove. hope that helps

Phase 2 ones/Vectra ones just twist off.

They only push fit, but are very tight, so you need a bit of muscle to shift them.

It shows how old mine must have been, i removed it quite easily just by pulling and twisting.I have an aftermarket one to fit but i dunno how its spose to fit as the gear lever is covered in all plastic parts for the lift up reverse mechanism.

hack off the green plastic bit, then the later MK3 Astra/Vectra knob will push on.

Better still, get the lift up sleeve to match as it fits the knob better.
