    Devilbiss Spray Gun

I've got a Devlibiss SRi spot repair gun, looking to use it to spray a whole car so I'm going to need a larger paint cup. Anyone recommend any devilbiss spare part retailers? I tried some paint suppliers but they were only willing to deal in bulk orders

What size fluid tip and air cap you got on that? You may not be able to get a good enough fan to spray a car with it. You will need 6" width at 8-10" from panel to get a good finish, especially with metallics. micas or what have you. Solids you can fudge a little.

I have a mate who works for Devilbis so I'll ask if the pot can be ordered separately.

Is it gravity or suction feed?

BTW there were a bunch on eBay dead cheap about 2 weeks ago!

IIRC the SRi has a smaller screw thread for the pot so larger ones won't fit. And you really don't want to be trying to spray a whole car with a spot repair gun. Get yourself a decent full size gun for the job.

Again, iirc the fluid tip on those are about 0.8-1.0mm. Way too small.

Its a gravity fed gun. The screw size on mine is very small compared to others i've seen, my friend lent me a 32oz cup but it was too big. I've seen larger cups for the GTi model for sale online, but none for mine The gun can do a 6" fan easy, specs say it can do 1/4" to 8". I sprayed an old nova wing with it to try it out when I first got it and it did the job great although it ran out of paint twice. When you crack up the fan size the paint cup empties really quick. I really need to find a bigger cup, otherwise I'm thinking about using an upsidedown coke bottle

novashed - on a traditional HP gun about a 1.4 will be fine. I used to use a 1.6 just needs a bit more air behind it (I use a 3HP compressor so no problems)

HVLP caps & tips are a little different. My Devilbis has a 1.2 for LVLP use.

Fragpot - I really think you'd be better trying to get a proper "production" style gun, you may get a fan but is it giving a decent patern and coverage? I'll ask my mate whats available and see if he knows anything.

    Cheers Al,

Money is not on my side at the moment, my mate wont lend me his GTi because apparently I never cleaned it properly last time despite using about a litre of gunwash. Even tho he was the one that did most of the painting and filled the gun. Anyway i'm getting bitchy, so yeah the SRi will pretty much have to do.

I've got a Devilbiss catalogue thing in front of me. Check your fluid tip and cap. Apparently the SRi comes with 0.7, 0.8 or 1.0 fluid tip and 2 air caps, a 205 (HVLP) and 210 (compliant). The biggest possible fan size is 160mm (about 6") and will flow 81 grams/min (both with 210 cap and 1.0mm tip. This compares to a fan size of up to 265mm and fluid flow of 210 grams/min for the GTi (1.4 tip). Even with a 1.2 tip the GTi flows 170grams/min with a fan of 245mm.

So best you ask your mate really nicely to borrow his GTi, and his time promise to strip it down properly to clean it.

Thanks for that info mike, I've never actually compared the specs of the SRi to the GTi before. Looking at how puney it is I think realistically I'd be pushing it trying to spray the roof and bonnet etc with the SRi. Having a look at GTi's on eBay at the moment. Quite expensive and I dont paint stuff that much to really justify buying it. Actually they are more than my compressor was Looks like they can be picked up pretty cheap from america, so I might look into getting one.

You can get much cheaper guns that perform pretty well. Ask Alistair, he will be able to advise.

Looking on eBay just now. Anyone got any lower price alternatives? Been looking at a few guns but I'm not really sure what names to look for. What are sealey guns like? I've got some sealy air tools and they seem no too bad. Dont know anyone that uses sealey spray guns, but then again I only know 1 guy who paints and he has the GTi lmao. My compressor is a 50Litre with 1.5HP motor, would like an HVLP gun but I can get by without.

DO NOT buy a Devilbis GTi from America. By the time you add duty and VAT you'll have paid as much as for a UK one (at discount or eBay prices). Also the USA spec is HVLP using about 15 cfm of air and will not run off a single phase compressor. My 3HP / 150 litre Compair would struggle to drive one. I guess its so they can paint those big pickups, SUVs, etc. easy! My mate who works for Devilbiss was quite adamant on this one.

I got my GTi Spectrum Special Edition from Germany, it will run off a 3HP and leave enough air for my Wilson respirator. I paid £180 for the gun with shipping and insurance and there is no duty VAT to pay importing within the EU. You might find cheaper prices on the regular GTi. You want the 110 air cap version for home use, and even that might be a little heavy on a 1.5 HP compressor.

Try www.ebay.de and worth noting that one of the guys selling GTI guns on eBay UK buys them off the guy in Germany I got mine from...

There are some economy HVLP guns on eBay UK - some Italian make about £18. I got one and used it for a celly job and it was fine. Not sure how it would work on a smaller compressor though. I think it says in the spec on the auction it will? Probably worth checking out as it does have a nice fan and low overspray for such a cheap gun.

With a 1.5 HP I'd probably stick to a regular High Pressure gun really, they use less air volume and the compressor should keep up fine. About the best High Pressure gun is the good old Devilbiss JGA. I've used these for spraying old school lacquer finishes and they are great to use. IIRC new price was £70 +VAT last time I looked and they now do a gravity feed version as well. They turn up on eBay every now and again. Usually go for about £50 IIRC. Beware there is now a JGA HVLP (US market only) which uses too much air for your compressor.

I have not had good experiances with the Clarke guns. This may have been me being a div, but I had one DOA and have heard of other people having the same problem of then just not working.

Ah, the good old JGA. You can't go wrong with one of them. They practically do the spraying for you!!!

Right guys, thanks for the advice. I'm not spraying it for a couple of weeks yet so in the mean time I'll keep a look out on eBay. I'll let you know how I get on on the shopping front and the spraying front.
